Getting into Flying Scale Model Airplanes

Almost or many RC airplane enthusiast dream of having their favorite Full Size replica to bore holes in the sky. But it will not be easy just to copy the exact dimension of the full size airplane and then scale it down to what ever you desire, like for example 1/8 scale, 1/4 scale so forth and so on. Even though you know how to use CAD software to design and draw the airplane, without considering the aerodynamic principles, you won't have a stable airplane. So this is the first step on how to fly scale model airplanes. It will be impossible to fly your scale Model Airplane without considering the aerodynamic design. Again, before you attempt to build & fly your very first scale model, you should have already build your skill to at least an intermediate level. Meaning, flying a non-scale shoulder wing design type of model airplane. Then choose the trainer type full-scale model airplane like the Cessna 150 or J3 Piper Cub.

At least those airplanes have a built-in stability design. The wings constant chord and rectangular (for J3 Piper Cub). High wing location, meaning the wings is above the fuselage, which have pendulum stability. Landing gear is tricycle type (for Cessna 150). But wait, does this mean the stability is the same when you scale down those airplanes? The answer is No. Those airplanes will fly terrible when you scale it down and copy the exact dimensions. Like what I've mentioned previously, the aerodynamic design should be considered. This phenomenon is known as " The Scale Effect". You can't scale down the air molecules & the viscosity of air. The behavior will be different. The wing location & wing area, horizontal and vertical stabilizer area & location, airfoil design, plays a major role on its stability.

Redesigning the airplane is essential. The model has to be redesigned based on the lift and drag coefficients and Reynolds number on its miniature dimensions to achieve stability. This is why some Almost Ready to Fly, Ready to Fly or Kits have 30% or 40% scale specification. Meaning only 30% was copied from the full size airplane. Possibly the horizontal stabilizer area was modified or vertical stabilizer. Changed the airfoil type or wing area. In order to achieve stability. The closer its size to the full size airplane, the more you can copy the exact dimension and behavior. This is why 1/4 scale model airplanes are popular to those really serious on RC airplane modeling. Considering the cost and set-up, danger to life and property, it will only be possible for those who were well to do. Imagine how many gallons of fuel it will consume! You will also need bigger flying field. Good thing that gas or petroleum engines (chainsaw engines) are fit to use in those monsters which reduces the cost of fuel. Unlike using methanol, castor oil and nitromethane for fuel on glow engines.

So before having any expectations on acquiring one, first consider those facts.

Military Watches

In Navigator watch design, the seconds bezel allowed the pilot to synchronize the seconds hand with correct reference time before takeoff, and to make manual corrections to radio time signals while in flight, thus eliminating any "chronometer error" and the navigational errors that could result.

Great War, Great Technological Advances

Seconds continued to be of the essence in both military technology and military watches. "Center-seconds" hands, (also called a "hack seconds feature") - the feature that allowed for synchronization between two timepieces - continued to improve and advance.

Sizing is all over the board; historically, such notable companies as Elgin, Waltham, and Bulova Watches crafted watches (for the renamed Army Air Force in 1941), as small as 31mm in diameter. These watches were worn on the outside of a flight jacket or on the navigator's thigh. The Germans also added antimagnetic protection to their chronometers.

Within another major Axis power, Seiko produced a staggering number of military watches for the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. These watches averaged around 49mm in diameter.

Navigating The Cold War

As the days of WWII faded into memory and the strained peace of the "Cold War" became reality, military budgets and military technology boomed. In the era of nuclear bombs the airplane ascended to its most powerful military and political role in history. Watchmakers rose to the call by designing an instrument worthy of going into battle with humankind's most powerful weapon. Those were the Glory Days of the military watch, although no one design house can claim full credit for the strides made in the industry during that time.

Cold War-era military watches were much larger in size than the average American navigators before them. Averaging 36mm in diameter, the crafting of these timepieces was moved to Switzerland and Swiss military watch companies with centuries' old reputations for precision. Like those before them, these Navigators also featured a matte black dial marked with white Arabic numerals 1-12, and with white indices. The new designs did not have white numerals at cardinal 3, 6, 9, and 12. Another new addition was a shatterproof Perspex acrylic crystal, which protected its large 12 ligne movement from magnetic fields. These hand-wound watches were expected to be water-resistant to 20 feet, including water-resistance under low-pressure at operational altitudes.

Own A Piece of History - At A Reasonable Price

While several of the top-tier watchmakers are reviving this classic style, vintage quality does not have to break the bank. Seiko watches established a reputation for the brand, recognized by watch collectors. You can buy watches from Seiko for reasonable prices, classic Navigator-style watches can be enjoyed by all. Paper Airplane World Records

World Record, New Time Aloft
Takuo Toda set a new récord for longest paper airplane flight at a competition in Hiroshima Prefecture in April of 2009. His record flight topped Blackburn's by 0.3 seconds, now the world récord is 27.9 seconds. He folded his plane, measuring approximately 10cm in length, from a single sheet of paper. The previous record of 27.6 seconds was achieved by Ken Blackburn in the USA. Ken is one of the superstars of the paper aircraft world today and keeps all of us, all over the World, working hard to match his skills. He is also very much a gentleman and has been surpassed once by Chris Edge and Andy Currey from England, only to smash the 20.9 seconds set by Chris and Andy with a world topping 27.6 seconds. This time is going to take some beating. The very best of luck to all who try.

World Record, Old UK Time Aloft
The longest UK (ex-World Record) duration of a flight by a paper aircraft, indoors, is 20.9 seconds.  This was achieved by Chris Edge of British Aerospace Defense LTD, and Andy Currey from the Defense Evaluation Research Agency. By an amazing coincidence they both recorded exactly the same time and on consecutive throws. “The Guinness Book of Records” allowed two World Record holders, because this record is about the times set at the same event, so it’s similar to setting identical pole position times in formula one.  This record was established on July 28, 1996 at Cardington Airship Hangars in Bedfordshire, England.

Here are the rules for setting a Guinness world record for paper airplane time aloft: 1. The flight must take place indoors. 2. The plane must be made from a single sheet of paper that is no larger than 9.84 by 13.90 inches (250 x 353 mm) and weighs no more than 5 ounces (150 grams). Typing or copier paper works great. 3. It is OK to use some tape or glue. 4. The plane must be thrown from level ground. The stopwatch must start when you release the plane, and end when the plane touches anything (the floor, a wall, a chair…). 5. You are allowed six attempts. 6. You must submit the following to file a record claim: • Signed statements from two witnesses saying that they saw you set the record. • A newspaper clipping about the event. • Color photographs and a continuous video tape of the flight (you must have both). The longest distance flown by a paper aircraft launched indoors, from the ground, is 193 feet (58.82m) This was achieved by Tony Fletch of Wisconsin, USA at the La Crosse Centre on May 21, 1985 and is a world record. The distance flown is almost equal to the length of a Jumbo Jet, and much further than the first flight by one of the Wright brothers.

NASA – Helps Pupils
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in the Langley Research Centre Hangar used ex-astronauts and engineers to help pupils from various schools in Hampton, Virginia, USA to develop, build and fly a record breaking large paper aircraft, with a wing span of 30ft 6in (9.15m) on March 25, 1992. If you think that’s large see the current World Record for the Largest wingspan.

World Record – Largest Wingspan
The paper aircraft with the largest wingspan, 40ft 10in (1.97m), was made by a team of students from the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.  It was flown indoors on May 16, 1995. Launched indoors by one person, it flew a distance of 114ft 2in (34.80m) from a 10ft (3m) high platform.   In order to comply with the rules, it only had to fly more than 50ft (15.24m) from the edge of the launch platform.  This aircraft would have covered a greater distance, but for a wall which stopped it in mid flight, causing extensive damage to the nose section, and still smashing the world record in the process.

Most Expensive – One of NASA’s
One of the most expensive and lightest paper aircraft ever flown, was the paper aircraft thrown inside one of NASA’s space shuttles, during a routine space flight. The fuel alone used to carry it into space makes that paper aircraft one of the most expensive. It was the lightest because of the lack of gravity in space.

Amazing Fact: Fly on Forever
In space where there is no atmosphere, if a paper aircraft were thrown it would not fly at all; it would float away in a straight line. With no gravity to pull it down, it would possibly fly on forever until it hit an object.

Paper Aircraft – Fly Up not Down
Paper aircraft that are trimmed to fly on earth will, when thrown inside a spacecraft, fly up and not down, as would normally be expected. This is because there is no gravity in the spacecraft, but there is lift created by the wings, as they fly in the atmosphere inside the spacecraft.

The Smallest Paper Airplane
The smallest origami paper model of a Crane Bird was folded under a microscope using tweezers by a Mr Naito from Japan and was made from a piece of paper 2.9 mm square. It is displayed on top of a sewing needle. Now that’s small – what a pity it didn’t fly! If Mr Naito were to make small paper aircraft, how would he see them fly?

model airplanes engines
Model Airplane jet turbines?

Are those little jet turbines that R/C guys put on model planes supposed to be oil lubricated or do they get there lubrication some other way?? And how does the fuel system on those little engines work?? I have seen one rev to 200,000 rpm and I was amazed that it could spin that fast without coming apart. I was just curious how those little engines work?

I'm really not sure. I built a small turbo-jet engine for a science fair project and i just added some castor oil to the fuel mixture and it worked fine up to about 15,000 RPMs. After that it was getting so hot that it was jsut burning the oil with the fuel which eventually led to by bearings fusing together. I really don't know how it's SUPPOSED to be done.

If you are interestied in this kind of stuff go to www.jet-man.com/actuel.html
It's really interesting!

Electric flight - the best and worst of Li-Po

What happened to that mosquito snarl that always seemed to accompany the sight of model airplanes? The answer is they're going electric and silent. Li-Po (Lithium Polymer or Li-Poly) batteries are rapidly becoming the standard power source for Electric Model Airplanes. Li-Po batteries are smaller, lighter and hold more power than their predecessors (Nickel Cadmium and Nickel Metal Hydride). There are three specifications that need to be taken into consideration when making a Li-Po battery purchase for your electric Model Airplane.

The voltage of the battery will tell you how powerful it is, the amperage rating will give you an idea how long it will last, and the burst/constant power rating will tell you how quickly the power will discharge. A major difference between Li-Po batteries and others available for RC model airplane use is that it is much easier to mistreat the battery thereby creating unsafe situations the consequences oc which can be dramatic. Li-Po batteries can be very dangerous if you don't follow all of the safe handling procedures set out by the battery manufacturers.

In most cases, Li-Pos used for model airplanes come in two voltage ratings ratings; 11.1v and 7.4v. The rating dictates how many volts the battery will discharge to your brushless RC motor. Electric RC model aircraft motors themselves have ratings that relate to this voltage discharge specification. The voltage of a Li-Po battery is directly tied to the RPM output of a brushless motor in that a motor rated for 1000kvm will rotate 1000 times per minute for every volt it receives from the battery. In other words, a 1000kvm motor is capable of 7400 RPM when using a 7.4v Li-Po, and 11,100 RPM when using an 11.1v Li-Po. This information, combined with the prop type and weight of the plane gives you all the data needed to calculate the final thrust output of a given motor.

The amperage rating of Li-Po batteries is rated in milliamp hours (mAh). This technical term describes how long the Li-Po will provide electrical power in much the same way that the size of the fuel tank on a glow powered airplane will dictate how long the engine can keep running. Typical electric RC model airplane flights can last 20%-50% longer when using Li-Po compared to other batteries. The larger the mAh rating, the bigger and heavier the battery will be. This is a major factor to take into consideration when putting together any electric RC model aircraft.

Li-Po battery burst rates describe the output characteristics of the battery. Burst rates tell you how much power the battery is safely capable of discharging in one big burst. This number is often higher than the constant power rating. Once the burst of energy has been discharged, the constant power rating tells you where the power output will settle down to.

Li-Pos come with very strict safety guidelines that tell you how to care for them. Charging rates, charging times, and damaged battery disposal procedures just to name a few. Damage to your RC electric model airplane can be avoided by following these guidelines. Properly matched brushless motors and Li-Po batteries can provide hours of clean and quiet flying enjoyment. Take the time to understand everything that's involved with a Li-Po setup and you will have more fun and more time in the sky with your electric model airplane.

XIII (Thirteen) click here:

XIII (Thirteen) is a Franco-Belgian comics series written and drawn by Belgians Jean Van Hamme and William Vance, revolving around an amnesiac protagonist who seeks to discover his concealed past. With its plot inspired by Robert Ludlum's book The Bourne Identity,[1] XIII was initially serialised in 1984 in Spirou, and was later published by Dargaud. In 2003, the storyline of the first five volumes was adapted into a video game, also titled XIII, that was released on several platforms. A XIII TV miniseries starring Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff was released in 2008.

Only the first three volumes were translated to English in the initial 1989 run by Catalan Communications. In 2005, Alias Comics started publishing it as a monthly comics edited for U.S. audiences, but stopped after 5 issues. In 2007, Dabel Brothers Productions in association with Marvel Comics published an uncensored XIII Volume 1 TP collecting the first three albums, and previously released issue #6 free online.[2] English titles below are translations of the original titles, and may change for the actual albums if and when they are released in English.

[edit] Storyline

XIII chronicles the adventures of a man, dubbed "XIII", with memory loss who is searching for his past, and a group of his friends who are trying to unravel the mystery of his identity, which is tangled in conspiracies, secrets, and killers who are out to murder him.

[edit] Volumes 1-5

The series begins with a man washing up on a shore in Peacock Bay in the East Coast of the United States, suffering from amnesia, and just the tattoo "XIII" on his collarbone to link him to his past. Volumes one through five deal with 'XIII' searching for his identity and his past, only to find himself confronting the "conspiracy of the XX" which aims to a coup d'état in the United States. They form a closed story arc, ending with the destruction of the "the XX".

In the first volume, XIII washes ashore and soon finds himself hunted by assassins for reasons unknown to him. He manages to escape them and collect a photograph of himself in company of a woman, developed by a photograph shop in the city of Eastown. XIII departs to Eastown, where he identifies the woman on the photograph as Kim Rowland, widow of U.S. Army Captain Steve Rowland. Going to Kim Rowland's address, XIII finds a hidden message left by Kim saying that someone nicknamed "the Mongoose" has found track of her and that she will wait for XIII "where the Indian goes". Once again hunted by killers, XIII is rescued by the Colonel Amos, a government agent investigating the murder of President of the United States William Sheridan. Colonel Amos has a video footage showing XIII killing the President and so is sure he has caught the assassin, but he still ignores its real identity. XIII manages to escape, and on his run, is confronted by the Mongoose, the chief of the killers hunting XIII.

In the second volume, XIII's search for Kim Rowland leads to his capture by army General Carrington, who identifies XIII as Steve Rowland, Kim Rowland's husband and former member of a special operation unit called SPADS (Special Assault and Destroying Sections) Carrington created and commanded when Rowland was supposedly killed in an helicopter crash two years before. "Rowland" is returned to his home in Southbourg by Carrington's aide, Lieutenant Jones. While his father, Jeremie Rowland, a rich land owner, and other relatives express no doubt about his identity, XIII is disappointed to not find Kim there. Amos comes to meet XIII and still holds him as his prime suspect as his fingerprints were found on the sniper rifle that shot President Sheridan. But as XIII's amnesia prevents him to be of any use to find who has sponsored Sheridan's assassination, Amos lets XIII go looking for Kim Rowland because as she's hiding, he suspects she knows something important. XIII finally manages to find "where the Indian goes", but is tricked by Jeremie Rowland's young wife Felicity. Felicity kills Jeremie Rowland and Steve's uncle Matt, implicating XIII for the murders, in the aim to inherit of Jeremy's fortune. XIII nevertheless escapes the police with Carrington's and Lieutenant Jones' help, and meets with Kim in her hiding place. Kim reveals to him she is tattooed as well, wearing tattoo number XVII, that she doesn't know XIII real name, who is in fact no Steve Rowland. Kim disappears as XIII is arrested by the police, tried and found guilty for the murder of the Rowlands, and sentenced to maximum security prison.

The third volume finds XIII in a facility for the criminally insane. Meanwhile Colonel Amos, pursuing its investigation, begin to realize that XIII is not Steve Rowland but a body double. He so assumes that Steve Rowland was really killed in action and that XIII endured plastic surgery, assassinated President Sheridan, and the Mongoose tried to kill him to leave the investigators a body to be identified as Steve Rowland to drive the investigation into a dead end. Colonel Amos requests Carrington's help to identify people having been trained as top-level special operators and fitting XIII's physique, in the aim to find out XIII's real identity. Carrington provides the papers of about twenty people, one of them, a Ross Tanner, is missing since two years. Amos decides to leave XIII in prison to have him at hand and have him treated to disrupt its amnesia. The treatment fails, and the Mongoose tries to have XIII killed in the prison. To evade Mongoose's killer, XIII attempts an evasion which fails but Carrington and Jones manage to breakout XIII.

Volume four begins with Colonel Amos finding that Carrington invented the Tanner identity, and suspects him to be part of the conspiracy to kill President Sheridan. XIII, under the name of Ross Tanner, has been hidden by Carrington in a SPADS training facility in the fictitious country of San Miguel. Pursuing its check of files, Colonel Amos finds that in the grave of a Jason Fly was in fact the body of the real Captain Steve Rowland, not killed in an helicopter crash two years before but by bullets shortly after the assassination of President Sheridan. Assuming now that Rowland was the real assassin, Amos is confused about XIII real role but exposes Judge Allenby, who once identified one body in helicopter crash as the one of Rowland and is now chief of the investigation, as one of the conspirators, wearing the number VI. Amos asks Allenby the name of the Number I of the conspiracy, but Allenby is killed by a Mongoose's killer who is about to kill Amos when he is shot by Kim Rowland. Meanwhile a female SPADS Sergeant named Betty Barnowsky reveals to XIII she has seen once Steve Rowland in Eastown after his alleged death in helicopter crash, in company with SPADS colonel Seymour Mac Call, thus exposed as member of the conspiracy. XIII, Barnowsky and Jones escape an assassination attempt by colonel Mac Call, but end lost in San Miguel jungle.

Kim Rowland takes Amos to FBI director Carl Heideger and General Carrington who reveal that after faking his death in the helicopter crash, Steve Rowland contacted his wife Kim and had her member of the conspiracy. Kim, not sharing the conspiracy ideology and herself a former FBI agent, secretly alerted his former boss Heideger, who was nevertheless unable to prevent the assassination of President Sheridan. Steve Rowland was shot by the Mongoose to end all investigations to uncover the conspiracy, but he escaped badly wounded and died shortly after telling Kim what happened. Heideger and Carrington then came up with a plan to make the conspiracy of the XX believe that Steve Rowland had survived to attract Mongoose's killers in the hope to arrest them and follow their trail to the conspirators. They had Jason Fly turned into Steve Rowland's double, but soon after he disappeared (he was shot, at this point lost his memory, where the story begins). Kim Rowland is also revealed to be Carrington's daughter.

At the start of volume five, XIII, Jones, and Barnowsky kidnap Marquis de Préseau, a rich land owner, to steal his jet to fly back to the USA. Meanwhile Carrington and Heideger have been arrested by the conspirators, as they prepare to take over the country during a large-scale military exercise. XIII and the women meet with Colonel Amos, who brings them into contact with Walter Sheridan, brother of the assassinated President William Sheridan and himself candidate to the presidency.

Sheridan helps XIII infiltrate the military center of operations, and together with President Galbrain they manage to stop the conspiracy at the last moment. The entire conspiracy, with the exception of the illustrious Number I, has been killed or captured. Walter Sheridan is elected president. Kim Rowland remains missing for unknown reasons. At the end of the story arc XIII believes he has found his old identity as Jason Fly, and is prepared to continue his life normally, even if his memories have not yet returned.

[edit] Volumes 6-8

In the following volumes XIII takes up the investigation about his past. Volumes six and seven bring XIII to Greenfalls, a snowy town in the Rocky Mountains, where the story revolves around the fate of his father in the McCarthian 1950's. XIII learns that his father, Jonathan Fly, was murdered by the local Ku Klux Klan chapter, after they found out Fly's real identity was Jonathan Mac Lane, a "red" journalist who had to flee after suffering under McCarthy's witch hunt. The Mongoose still tracks XIII with the blessing of Jonathan MacLane's assassins, but XIII evades the manhunt, get justice for the murder of his father and manages to arrest the Mongoose, who reveals that he was on Number I's boat when he shot the bullet that made XIII amnesic, but no further information about Number I. The story ends and with a good idea that he has finally found his true identity as Jason Mac Lane.

In volume eight, XIII is approached by President Sheridan to become a special agent, charged with finding the still at large Number I. The Mongoose evades from custody. XIII tracks down Kim Rowland, guessing she hides because she knows the identity of the Number I. He discovers that one of the boats close to the spot where he was found amnesic is Walter Sheridan's yacht. Meanwhile, Jones investigates further, and discovers that Kim Rowland had a love affair with Sheridan and had a child of him. After transmitting this information to XIII, they become convinced that Wally Sheridan was, in fact, Number I, and used the conspiracy of the XX to have his brother killed and later had the conspiracy exposed to himself become president. Walter Sheridan had the child kidnapped to force Kim to marry Steve Rowland, to report the conspiracy to Heideger, to betray Jason Fly/Mac Lane when Heideger's plan threatened to expose him as Number I and have him trapped on his yacht where he was shot by the Mongoose. After trying to release Kim Rowland from an island where they believe she is sequestered, XIII and Jones, along with Kim, are caught by the Mongoose who is on Sheridan's yacht, and explodes it. XIII manages to rescue Jones only, and Kim Rowland is lost and presumed dead.

XIII finally faces Walter Sheridan, exposed as Number I but XIII has not any evidence or witness against him. Sheridan won't try to assassinate XIII to avoid a new investigation that might lead to expose him, and XIII and Jones leave the country.

[edit] Volumes 9-12

In the following volumes the action takes place in and around Costa Verde, a small fictional nation in Central America where XIII is led to believe he once led a revolution under the identity of "El Cascador", although El Cascador is supposedly dead. XIII gets involved with revolutionary Maria de los Santos, who claims to have been his wife. During the 10th episode, after freeing her from a prison from which she was awaiting execution, she confirms him to be her husband.

During the revolution XIII met up with Irish-American expat Sean Mullway, who claims to be XIII's real father. However, he also confirms XIII's identity as Jason Mac Lane. The history of XIII's Irish descent is revealed, and XIII learns that his mother was the sister of Giordino, who accidentally murdered her. The Giordino's are revealed as a Mafia family. At the end of the volume, XIII is offered amnesty by the American ambassador, who explains that XIII's help is needed: Carrington has apparently gone insane.

In volume twelve XIII, the corrupt American president Sheridan is kidnapped by General Carrington who has learnt that Sheridan ordered his daughter Kim's death. Carrington and Amos have XIII and Jones capture the Mongoose to get further evidence against Sheridan. In a televised "trial" Sheridan is revealed to the American public as the conspirator, with XIII and the Mongoose testifying. In the aftermath of the event the NSA director Giordino accidentally kills Sheridan, after Sheridan has killed the Mongoose.

Volume thirteen (XIII) is a special issue, where two journalists retrace the first twelve issues, clarifying and expanding the storyline.

[edit] Volumes 14-19

While in exile in Costa Verde, XIII and his father Mullway decide to attempt to find a treasure hidden somewhere in Mexico by their ancestors. Giordino, meanwhile, fabricates evidence revealing XIII as Seamus O'Neill, an IRA operative who trained under Fidel Castro. As O'Neill, XIII is wanted by the USA, but again manages to escape. He also survives an assassination by Irina Svetlanova, who has taken over the Mongoose's operation. After many setbacks the treasure is found, and then lost again. Meanwhile Giordino is finally removed from duty by the new President, who has received evidence from XIII and Mullway revealing Giordino as not only connected to the Mafia, but also as the true killer of Walter Sheridan.

Volumes eighteen and nineteen are the last albums written by Van Hamme. Volume eighteen The Irish Version was drawn by Jean Giraud otherwise known as Mœbius.[3] It figures as a story within the story, and it is referred to as part of the plot in volume nineteen The Last Round. This story is the prequel to the initial story arc, and finally solves all mysteries surrounding XIII's identity.

[edit] Popularity

First released in 1984 as a serial in the popular Belgian magazine Spirou, XIII was an instant hit among Spirou readers. The first three episodes were released as a single hardback volume by Dargaud the same year, a trend continued for later issues. By the time of the eighth issue, Thirteen against one, sales of the hardback had reached 140,000 copies, and the publisher belatedly realized that they had a bestseller on their hands. Promotion started, including a special drawing by the French national lottery in 2000 with 1,500,000 tickets and a €13,000 grand prize.

[edit] Influence

Also published in Spirou was the series Soda about a New York cop. An adventure published in 1999, Dieu seul le sait (Only God Knows), also has the titular character losing his memory, albeit for just a short time. References to the number "13" and other connections to the series appear throughout the story.

The Black Cat manga series, first published in 2000, has numerous similarities with XIII. The main character, Train Heartnet, is known as Chronos Number XIII in his job as a Sweeper or assassin. Train fails a mission in Bourne Identity-like fashion, winds up in conflict with Chronos, and must stop a massive conspiracy.

[edit] Translations

Originally in French, XIII was simultaneously translated into Dutch, and translations in other languages such as German, Polish and Italian quickly followed.

[edit] In English

  • In 1989, XIII was first released in English as Code XIII, but after the first three volumes, publication ended in 1990 when the publisher (Catalan/Comcat) went out of business.
  • In 2005, Alias Comics started publishing the title as a series of 32-page monthly comics edited for U.S. audiences. Five issues were released, but #6 was "Cancelled by Publisher" in February 2006. [4] Each issue covered half an album.
  • In 2006, the series went to Dabel Brothers Productions. They released the #6 online for free, and the first 144-page volume was released on February 7, 2007 with Marvel Comics, reprinting the first 3 albums.
  • Cinebook have been chosen to release the full series in English, and plans to publish all 19 books, at the rate of one every two months, starting in August 2010.[5]

[edit] Other languages

[edit] Portuguese

  • In 1988, XIII began publication in Portugal by Meribérica-Líber. The first three volumes were published over a two-year period, and the series returned in 1997 with the fourth album, after a seven-year hiatus. Meribérica published the first nine albums until it went out of business in 2004.
  • In 1990, Portuguese newspaper Público (Portugal) started publishing XIII in its Sunday supplement 'Publico Junior'. Eventually, the first 3 books were published in this manner, before 'Publico Junior' was discontinued in 1992.
  • In 2006, XIII is being published in Brazil by Panini Comics.[6] Panini is publishing XIII as a monthly series, with two episodes in each issue. Previously available in Brazil were the Portuguese editions published by Meribérica-Liber.

The first issue The Day of The Black Sun was named O Dia do Sol Negro, the literal translation. The first issue also included a second episode, named Onde Vai o Índio... (Where the Indian Walks), published in May 2006. All Brazilian issues are composed of two albums, except for issue 7, which included the original thirteenth volume, a double-sized album, alone.

[edit] Serbian

  • In 1980s first 3 volumes in monthly Super magazine from publisher Dečje Novine.
  • In 1990 first 6 volumes in monthly Gigant magazine from publisher Dečje Novine. Throughout the decade "Politikin zabavnik" magazine also reprinted most of the volumes, as part of its comic segment.
  • 2002-2008, the first 18 volumes were published through Marketprint.

[edit] Croatian

  • In 1990s volume 7 by Bookglobe
  • In 2008 Integral #1 by Bookglobe

[edit] Tamil

In Tamil, this series was released by Lion Comics in the name of "Iratha Padalam". In the near future, the company plans to release the 18 volumes in one book.[7][8]

[edit] Future

Jean Van Hamme has declared that he will not continue to write the series, but William Vance is interested in continuing it with another writer. Yves Sente, who has already taken over writing Thorgal from Van Hamme, is interested to continue the series. He was contacted by William Vance and said he'd propose a story to Van Hamme, but no agreement has been reached yet.[9]

[edit] Spin-off

A separate comic series called XIII Mystery, which follows and elaborates on some of the supporting characters from the XIII comic series, began by publisher Dargaud on October 3, 2008 with the release of the first issue, The Mongoose.[10] On October 30, 2009 the second issue, Irina, was released.[11]

[edit] Video game

Main article: XIII (video game)

XIII was adapted as a 2003 video game released for PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, the PC, and the Apple Macintosh. The plot of the game is an adaption of the first five volumes of the comic series.

Shopping for a Radio-Controlled Plane

When you buy a radio controlled plane for the first time, you may have some difficulty choosing the plane that will introduce you to the remote controlled hobby. You will want something that will be fairly cheap to purchase, and will give you a chance to learn how to fly remote controlled planes before you move onto more advanced planes. If you buy the first plane that you see, you could end up having a very bad experience for your first time, and be completely turned away from the hobby. This is why it is very important to know that there are many different characteristics that you can look for. In this article I will go over most of them. So read on to find out about what you need to look for to have the best experience possible when you fly a radio controlled plane for the first time.

First you need to assess your own building skills. You can buy airplane kits that require you to build the entire thing from scraps of wood, or you can buy kits that just require you to snap a few parts together. If you want to make a huge, prolonged project out of your radio controlled plane, then you can buy one that requires full assembly. However, you should always be sure that your building skills are up for it. If you don't want to spend the time required to do this, or if you don't have the prowess to build it, then you can buy a plane that does not require any assembly at all. You just pull it out of the box, and you're ready to go flying for the afternoon.

Next you will want to look for something that has stability for people without are flying for the first time. It may not seem like it, but to fly a radio controlled plane you need at least some skill. But, if you search for the right item you can find something that is more geared towards beginners. Slow flying speed is always a benefit, just as driving slow is a good way to learn how to control a car for the first time. You will want a light plane with larger wings that can catch the wind better. This will make takeoff easier. You will also want to look for planes that have flat bottoms, and wings mounted high on the body. If you get a plane that has all of these features, your maiden flight will be as smooth as possible.

Next you need to consider the model of the airplane you are going to buy. You can get model replicas of almost any type of plane, from the first Wright Brothers' plane to modern military jets. If you are buying a model plane, you are probably already interested in planes to begin with. Think of what plane you are most intrigued by when you look through plane books, and see if you can find a kit that is modeled after that plane. This will give you a personal interest in the model that you are getting. When you fly it for the first time, it will be almost like being in the cockpit of the actual plane.

After you have decided on these issues when picking your plane, the rest is just up to personal preference. But if you pay close attention to these and pick your plane carefully, you will find that radio controlled flying is a great way to spend your time. It is a very rewarding hobby, and it can last you a lifetime if you choose planes that are compliant with your level of skill. After all, you don't want to go out on your first flight and then crash your plane directly into the ground or a tree. So choose your first plane carefully, and you can avoid being immensely frustrated in the future.

Why Buy Hid Conversion Kits?

With cars you know that the normal headlights just don’t work. They are very effective in using as little electricity as possible, however, in most cases they are not actually bright enough to see the road and avoid possible hazards like hitting an animal. It is because they are so inefficient that people generally buy HID conversion kits to replace them.

HID stands for high intensity discharge. Using the HID headlights can put out more than 5 times the amount of light than you would get from your average halogen headlights. This means that you see more and can find it easier to avoid any problems.

HID is not your usual light bulb. With most light bulbs there is a filament surrounded by inert gases like argon that work to keep it from catching fire. The filament is attached to two long metal rods. As electricity pulses through them heat is produced, and eventually there is enough heat to cause enough visible light for a person to use. The halogen light bulb usually used in car is a little more advanced. It uses the same filament but encases it in quartz. It also fills envelope with halogen gases. The halogen gases work buy re-depositing atoms on the filament when the temperature is high enough and the halogen gases combine with tungsten vapors from the filament. This allows the light bulbs to burn at a higher temperature and they actually last longer as well.

There are lights that are more efficient than halogen lights though. HID lights are both brighter and take up less energy. Instead of using the usually filaments HID lights use gases to produce the light we use. HID headlights that you get with the
HID conversion kits
use the same high pressure technology that we often see used with street lamps. The gases used are often Mercury and is very close in design to a mercury vapor lamp. There is one little problem that scientist ha to work out though. Like with florescent light bulbs, these would take a long time to warm up and actually become bright. To help fix this there is xenon and a special controller that is used.

Back in the day HID headlights and
HID kits
were only offered as an option for those high end luxury cars. Today however, though they are still a little expensive, they are becoming more and more available as they are produced in greater quantity. They are becoming more popular because of the light benefits that people get out of them at night. To give you an idea as to just how beneficial the HID kits can be to your car, there are airplanes that use HID lights because of how bright they are.

Anybody who owns a car can benefit from HID conversion kits. This is especially true for people who generally have a hard time with seeing at night, which makes it harder to react in dangerous situations, including the elderly. If you chose a good quality HID light then you will improve your nighttime visibility and help to get you and your family where you need to be with less risk.

Carnian Alps

The Carnian Alps are a mountain range of the Southern Alps. They lie on the border between Austria (Tyrol, Carinthia) and Italy (South Tyrol, Belluno, Friuli (with the province of Udine)).

Historical concept of the 19 Century
The term was coined in the 19th century for a tripartite division of the eastern Alps in Norische Alps Carnian Alps used (A. Carnica) and Julian (Julia A.) or Krainer Alps. These cover the three groups on the following groups of mountains, as it gives the ADF:
Triglav from meets Julia (old: Terglu) up to the Dinaric Alps (Dinarides) - the modern concept of the Julian Alps is still largely
The Carnica along the Drava river to the Sava (old: Sow) - these are the Carnian Alps today (which still does well carnica ridge are called), the Gailtaler Alps, the Karawanken, Steiner Alpen (Kamniške or Savinjske Alps, Save Alps'), and the Pohorje (Pohorje)
Norica and the whole area of the Danube to the river Drava (ie the present-day eastern North and Central Alps, where at the time the western boundary of the Eastern Alps has been seen at the Dreiherrenspitze). This has to do with the modern concept of Noric Alps little more.

Carnian ridge
The Carnian ridge forms a very pronounced ridge running from east to west over 100 km between the catchment areas of river Drava, Gail and Tagliamento and are a popular hiking area.
The ridge to the west begins with the striking Held (2,433 m) in the ski resort of Sesto, reached Pfannspitz (2,678 m), Greater Kinigat (2,689 m) and Hochweissstein (Peralba Monte, 2694 m) on several occasions nearly 2,700 meters and the Hohe Warte as the highest peak 2780 m.
The eastern, lower part of the mountain range is crossed by two major passes: Plöckenpass and Nassfeldpass.
The Carnian Alps include the Eiskar - embedded in Kellerwandmassiv - the southernmost glacier in Austria.
History

"Carnia was" a province of the Roman Empire, the name probably originated in reference to an older Celtic name. The "Carinthia" the Carolingian period was colonized by both Bavaria and Slavs (Slovenes).
During World War I ran the front between Italy and Austria, along the Carnian Alps. The traces of this mountain war are still numerous. In Kötschach-Mauthen there exists a multi-award winning open air museum with installations in Plöckenpass area (around the Little Pal) and in 1970 by Walther Schaumann (1923-2004) launched the project of the peace path.

Balsa Wood

Lumbers Timbers and Wood

A lot of buildings and constructions have an integral structure made with timber. Timber or lumber is a wood commodity usually available in hardware stores. Another use of wood is in wood pulp or in making paper.

There are two types of wood, hardwood and softwood. The hardwood, softwood category in fact doe not indicate the hardness of the wood, instead refers to the type of seed produced by the tree. Hardwoods like eucalyptus and balsa which are frequently utilized as rough lumber in pulpwood, furniture-making and other kinds of objects requiring additional sawing and reshaping. Softwood like fir, spruce and pine are generally refined lumber utilized in the construction industry. Dimensional cuts and sizes for both wood types are available on the market. Some places for timber are timber wholesaling suppliers or suppliers that specialize in building and timber supplies

Timber, since they are produced from different types of trees, also come in different sorts.

Some of the timber types available in the market are:
* Brush Box is a familiar tree to many people living along the east coast of Australia. It is a solid, dense, with pinkish grey to reddish brown lumber, it is naturally waxiness and commonly used in floors, cladding and fencing.
* Cypress Pine is a common name to the three types of conifers in the cypress family: Callitris, Actinostrobus and Widdringtonia. It is a firm, knotty and fairly sturdy lumber with fine touch in common function for floors, panels, decks and structures.

*Jarrah is amongst the species of Eucalyptus in the southwest of Western Australia. Their appearance is similar to Honduras Mahogany. The timber is heavy, rough and dark red generally utilized as in flooring, paneling, joinery, decking and in furniture-making.

* Merbau, also known as ipil or kwila, grows in mangroves in Southeast Asia and islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is adurable, dark reddish brown rainforest lumber that is prone to tanning bleed. Frequent application are on decking, fences, flooring and paneling.

*A hardwood that is quite easy to work with is Oregon. It is identified to possess a high content of resin that crystallizes on the surface. Pergolas and structural timber are common utilizations of Oregon.

* Radiata Pine is a common plant in many areas of the world like USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand that is suitable for staining. General application consist of furniture-making and general construction.

* Spotted gum is a very dense and oily Australian tree species usually utilized in flooring, cladding, decking, fencing, landscaping, retaining walls and as structural timber using a darker timber stain.

Learning How to Get the Most Out of your Paper Airplane Design

We have at one point or another in our childhood had fun flying paper airplanes. While we all use paper the paper airplane design that is used is almost always different. Many of us learnt how to build paper airplanes from our older brothers and sisters. There is also a good possibility that our fathers and uncles would have imparted their knowledge about these paper airplanes to us as well.

While the joy of seeing our paper creations flying is thrilling beyond words, we seldom thought about finding ways of improving upon this perceived perfection. Today you can find booklets that will describe how to get the most out of your paper airplane design. These instructions will show you the best ways that you can build your Model Airplane.

You will also find methods for improve the distance and height that can be achieved in paper airplane models. These instructions should be followed faithfully at first. Once you have gotten the principles of this long flight down pat you can slowly modify the design structure of your paper airplane model.

The best way to get your paper airplane design to work properly is to first make a rough draft of the plane. Once you have gotten all of the details for your paper airplane ironed out you should cut this rough design out. Once the design is ready for assembling, you should see how to make this paper airplane ready for flight. You may need some glue (that is made especially for paper) and in some instances a rubber band.

The glue will help to bind the paper airplane together. You can also use the glue to strengthen the paper airplanes frame. Having placed all of the pieces where they belong on the paper airplane, you will be able to use the rubber band as an engine. Now this is a part of the paper airplane design that needs to be worked out carefully.

You will need to have a strong yet thin rubber band. The rubber band will need to be twisted tightly. Once the band has been wound really well it can be attached between the paper airplane’s propeller and the front end of the airplane. When you are ready to launch the paper airplane you can release the rubber band. Hopefully if you have all of the flight details worked out correctly your paper airplane design should achieve the necessary height to be able to fly for long distances with the help of the well placed rubber band.

Take your Homebuilt Airplanes Out for a Spin and Have Some Fun

We have seen many different types of airplanes both large and small being flown in the air. While it is necessary to have a ticket of a license to fly in one of these large airplanes, the smaller ones are ones that we can easily have fun with. These homebuilt airplanes are ones that you will need to devote some time to but the end result is an airplane that is built according to your needs.

Besides if there are any problems in these airplanes you have more than enough time to get out of the way. Plus you can always use these homebuilt airplanes to improve on your design. The first step to having one of these homebuilt airplanes is to select one or two that catch your fancy. Make sure that all of the parts that you will need are included in these kits.

Next if there is any other extra items that you will need to buy you should choose these items carefully. These may include a sharp pair of scissors and more glue. Once you have all of these items you can if you think that it will be of help look for different Model Airplane instructions. These instructions may be very helpful when you are making these homebuilt airplanes.

Even though building model airplanes is part of the fun there are some individuals who are more interested in the flying part of the plane. For these people there are some great homebuilt airplanes to investigate buying. These airplanes are called Almost Ready to Fly or ARFs. As most of the airplane construction has been pre-completed there is only a little more to do.

As a result of this, instead of the usual 10 to 20 hours of loving yet hard work that is put into homebuilt airplanes, the ARFs are ready to fly in about 4 hours. This ready ability to fly makes the ARFs very popular with those who have no desire for designing and building a model airplane of their own.

Now while both of these methods of getting your homebuilt airplane are viable, there is a cheaper alternative. This method is to simply take some paper of varying thicknesses and carefully draw out the shape of an airplane. Once you have the body length and shape drawn you will need to start on the wings. To make your homebuilt airplane from paper fly further you can design two wings shapes.

These are just of a few of the many different homebuilt airplanes that you will see people having fun flying. With that final saying take your homebuilt airplane out for a spin and have some fun.
