America's Very First Aircraft Carrier

here have been many great naval warfare ships over the history of the U.S. Navy. Many aircraft carriers went on to great distinction especially in the heroic battles that were part of World War II Naval warfare history. Names like the Lexington, the Saratoga, the Yorktown and the Enterprise fill the history books of great warships of World War 2 naval warfare. But the humble USS Langley has a long and distinguished career that included becoming the first ship to be retrofitted into an aircraft carrier that make the Langley worth of its own place in U.S. Naval history as well.

The Langley actually started out as the USS Jupiter when it was first commissioned in 1911. The Jupiter was a collier level ship and once it was put into action, it spent some time South America helping to establish a military presence during the difficult Veracruz crisis in 1914. But once that tension passed, the Jupiter got its first historic distinction of becoming the first ship to go through the Panama Canal from west to east. This was the beginning of some quiet accomplishments of this fine naval ship.

For the next decade, the Jupiter served primarily support functions mostly doing cargo duty and that was the service it provided during World War I. The Jupiter did see many ports performing support functions throughout Europe before returning to Norfolk Virgina to start a new life. On December 12, 1919, the life of "the Jupiter" came to an end when it was decommissioned. But for the vessel itself, this was only the beginning of its long and honorable career as a US naval warship.

It was in Norfolk that the former USS Jupiter underwent a transformation. Not only did it take on the name USS Langley in honor of Samuel Pierpont Langley, the ship underwent a dramatic transformation into the very first prototype of a U.S. naval aircraft carrier. The final configuration of the overhauled naval vessel was compete in 1922. Her very first commander in this new assignment was Kenneth Whiting and it was he who proudly put the Langley to work helping the navy develop the Navy's powerful aviation warfare capabilities that would make such a huge difference in winning the war against the axis powers that lay ahead.

As the first aircraft carrier ever in what would become the backbone of the American naval aircraft infrastructure, the Langley racked up plenty of firsts. October 17, 1922, was the first time a pilot took off from the deck of a ship. Just nine days later Lieutenant Commander Godfrey de Courcelles Chevalier was the first pilot to land on an aircraft carrier deck when he set down on the deck of the Langley.

The Langley continued to be a valuable part of the US naval arsenal even after it was converted to a seaplane trader in 1936. Then on February 27th, 1942, while supporting antisubmarine maneuvers during World War II, The Langley was struck by an onslaught of nine Japanese bombers, which tragically damaged the ship critically causing it to sink in the line of duty. But it is worthwhile to take some time as we have done here today to look back on an important part of our US naval history at a ship that through many evolutions served its country honorably and ushered in the era of the US Navy aircraft carrier. And that historic ship was the USS Langley.

Private Pilot License, Post Solo Flight Training Requirements

After you solo or have completed the solo requirements, your instructor should move you ahead to the next phase of training even if you are not quite ready to solo. Like I have said before many flight schools and instructors will not move you forward until you have solo'ed.

I personally move everyone forwards since the goal is to get you licensed on a budget without loosing quality of flight training.

Here are the Post Solo Requirements for your Private Pilot License Training. Once again they start off general and get more specific.

(a) General. (1) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, a student pilot must meet the requirements of this section before-

(i) Conducting a solo cross-country flight, or any flight greater than 25 nautical miles from the airport from where the flight originated.

(ii) Making a solo flight and landing at any location other than the airport of origination.

(2) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, a student pilot who seeks solo cross-country flight privileges must:

(i) Have received flight training from an instructor authorized to provide flight training on the maneuvers and procedures of this section that are appropriate to the make and model of aircraft for which solo cross-country privileges are sought;

(ii) Have demonstrated cross-country proficiency on the appropriate maneuvers and procedures of this section to an authorized instructor;

(iii) Have satisfactorily accomplished the pre-solo flight maneuvers and procedures required by §61.87( The Pre Solo requirements ) of this part in the make and model of aircraft or similar make and model of aircraft for which solo cross-country privileges are sought; and

(iv) Comply with any limitations included in the authorized instructor's endorsement that are required by paragraph (c) of this section.
This is once again a general requirement for Student Pilot Solo Cross Countries. Now I will dig into them a little more and you find the following.

(3) A student pilot who seeks solo cross-country flight privileges must have received ground and flight training from an authorized instructor on the cross-country maneuvers and procedures listed in this section that are appropriate to the aircraft to be flown.

There is a lot more in this regulation. But the important part for this discussion is what is required for you to be eligible for Solo Cross Countries: As you move down this regulation you find the following:

(e) Maneuvers and procedures for cross-country flight training in a single-engine airplane. A student pilot who is receiving training for cross-country flight in a single-engine airplane must receive and log flight training in the following maneuvers and procedures:

(1) Use of aeronautical charts for VFR navigation using pilotage and dead reckoning with the aid of a magnetic compass;

(2) Use of aircraft performance charts pertaining to cross-country flight;

(3) Procurement and analysis of aeronautical weather reports and
forecasts, including recognition of critical weather situations and estimating visibility while in flight;

(4) Emergency procedures;

(5) Traffic pattern procedures that include area departure, area arrival, entry into the traffic pattern, and approach;

(6) Procedures and operating practices for collision avoidance, wake turbulence precautions, and windshear avoidance;

(7) Recognition, avoidance, and operational restrictions of hazardous terrain features in the geographical area where the cross-country flight will be flown;

(8) Procedures for operating the instruments and equipment installed in the aircraft to be flown, including recognition and use of the proper operational procedures and indications;

(9) Use of radios for VFR navigation and two-way communications;

(10) Takeoff, approach, and landing procedures, including short-field, soft-field, and crosswind takeoffs, approaches, and landings;

(11) Climbs at best angle and best rate; and

(12) Control and maneuvering solely by reference to flight instruments, including straight and level flight, turns, descents, climbs, use of radio aids, and ATC directives.

Notice there are no hour requirements in this regulation. All of these areas need to be in your logbook but the hour requirements only come into play in the general requirements.

“What color is an angel?”

 I looked up from the book I was reading to see my 7-year-old granddaughter with a large box of crayons spread out on the floor above a coloring book.

"Is it a boy angel or a girl angel?" I asked.  "A boy," she responded.  "Then use a light blue crayon," I concluded and went back to my book.

However, since then I've been thinking about how a simple question by a yet unpolluted child can't always be answered so simply.  How many colors do angels have?  How many kinds of angels can you name?

My thoughts returned to my own experience.  I'd been visited for some time by a unique, specialized angel.  "Mark Angeli!" he called himself.  Mark seemed to appear in my life as I was facing a problem or needed to move to the next level in my business.  Service businesses like mine, Vibrant Carpet Cleaners, can be one-man shows or can expand by adding more vans and technicians.  Every change brings its challenges.  To this day, I don't know why but whenever I got in a pickle, my angelic messenger would show up and give me timely instruction.  Mark always wore a clean sharp blue business suit.  If I were coloring him, it would be dark blue.

The kinds of angels that appear in a cloud and speak with a voice of thunder get colored bright white.

Since we rarely see a guardian angel, I guess they shall remain colorless.  Think of the things they do for us. Invisible hands extracted a man from a mashed car that rolled off the highway.  Drowning people tell us that someone pulled them from the lake, saw to their comfort and then disappeared.  A little girl playing, in the front yard, pedals her tricycle into the driveway and is picked up tricycle and all -- out of the path of dad's backing car.  Sometimes a guardian angel will simply whisper in your ear about what you should say or do in difficult or challenging situations.

Then there are angels in disguise and/or are actually human.  Their colors are warm because they bring comfort and protect.

Red is reserved for the angels that should be lost and forgotten.  These are the Devil's angels.  They promote evil in actions and in word.  If "conflict" is their middle name, then destruction is their last name.  They inspire men to do evil and find glory in the results.  "And our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself; yea, to that being who beguiled our first parents, who transformeth himself nigh unto an angel of light, and stirreth up the children of men unto secret combinations of murder and all manner of secret works of darkness."   2 Nephi 9:9

One color we won't find in any crayon box is action.  When an angel shows up some kind of action needs to follow.  An angel told one man to move his trailer in the night.  His wife and kids were sleeping in it.  He moved it.  In the morning, he saw that a huge tree had fallen right on the spot from where the trailer had once been.  An angel saved my own brother.  My brother Mikie, used to take naps, while the rest of us played in the park in Ojai, CA, in the back of a Volkswagon station wagon.  We always parked in the same spot.  Upon responding to a "prompting" mother removed him from the car.  A short time later, we heard a large, crashing sound.  When we went to see what caused it, we discovered that our car flattened its entire length to wheel height by an ancient oak tree.  Mom moved Mikie to preserve his life.  Today he's a registered nurse.  Wouldn't you guess? he's an angel of sorts, himself.

"Yea, and I know that good and evil have come before all men; he that knoweth not good from evil is blameless; but he that knoweth good and evil, to him it is given according to his desires, whether he desireth good or evil, life or death, joy or remorse of conscience. Now, seeing that I know these things, why should I desire more than to perform the work to which I have been called? Why should I desire that I were an angel that I could speak unto all the ends of the earth?  For behold, the Lord doth grant unto all nations, of their own nation and tongue, to teach his word, yea, in wisdom, all that he seeth fit that they should have; therefore we see that the Lord doth counsel in wisdom, according to that which is just and true."  Alma 29:5-8

Angels are all around us.  The eye of the soul can be open to see spiritual things, as virtues and angels. Our only requirement is to believe and we can see them; they often exist as mortal living breathing people, or as those who have had mortal experience and passed on, or as heavenly beings who have not yet tasted mortality.  There is no requirement to have angelic ministrations.  We need not fear them.  A chat with an angel is a good thing!

MiG Flights: Get an Insight into Mig 29 Jet Fighters

If you want to do a mig flight, you can currently only choose between a mig 29 flight or a flight in the mig-31. A few years ago, many more aircraft were available for a rented ride: Russian mig flights were carried out in mig-21, mig-23 and even mig-25. Those days are gone. What has changed?

To understand the current situation, let's look how the mig flights in Russia have evolved since the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Normal military operations continued, of course - such mig flights were not interrupted, normal operations from air bases like Kubinka were kept in place.

This is not the end of the story, though. Big parts of the Russian military-industrial complex have been suffering from decreasing arms sales. The SOKOL Aircraft Factory in Nizhniy Novgorod, an industrial city in the Volga region not far from Moscow, was desperately searching for new ways to generate revenue. After intensive contact between high-ranked staff of the SOKOL Aircraft plant and the flight broker MiGFlug.com, people at the factory started to realize that russian mig flights were in high demand - and that the unavailability of such flights at LII led to a supply vacuum. As producer of MiG-29UB aircraft (UB is the two-seater version of the MiG-29), people at SOKOL plant started to realize that mig jet flights could be a way to generate revenue and got the necessary permissions to carry out mig 29 flights as well as mig 31 flights with paying clients. Finally, after the uncertainity of early 2006, Russian mig flights were possible again.

In Summer 2006, only months after mig jet flights in Zhukovsky came to a halt, the first-ever so-called "westerner" took off from Sormovo Airfield in Nizhniy Novgorod, where today's mig 29 flights are being carried out. Long and intensive negotiations between the Aircraft Factory and Zurich-based MiGFlug made it possible for a Swiss Citizen in his 30's to open a new era of mig flights. Since that day in July 2006, mig 29 flights are a common sight in the skies of Nizhniy Novgorod and russian mig flights remain possible, even for non-pilots.

Military Watches

In Navigator watch design, the seconds bezel allowed the pilot to synchronize the seconds hand with correct reference time before takeoff, and to make manual corrections to radio time signals while in flight, thus eliminating any "chronometer error" and the navigational errors that could result.

Great War, Great Technological Advances

Seconds continued to be of the essence in both military technology and military watches. "Center-seconds" hands, (also called a "hack seconds feature") - the feature that allowed for synchronization between two timepieces - continued to improve and advance.

Sizing is all over the board; historically, such notable companies as Elgin, Waltham, and Bulova Watches crafted watches (for the renamed Army Air Force in 1941), as small as 31mm in diameter. These watches were worn on the outside of a flight jacket or on the navigator's thigh. The Germans also added antimagnetic protection to their chronometers.

Within another major Axis power, Seiko produced a staggering number of military watches for the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. These watches averaged around 49mm in diameter.

Navigating The Cold War

As the days of WWII faded into memory and the strained peace of the "Cold War" became reality, military budgets and military technology boomed. In the era of nuclear bombs the airplane ascended to its most powerful military and political role in history. Watchmakers rose to the call by designing an instrument worthy of going into battle with humankind's most powerful weapon. Those were the Glory Days of the military watch, although no one design house can claim full credit for the strides made in the industry during that time.

Cold War-era military watches were much larger in size than the average American navigators before them. Averaging 36mm in diameter, the crafting of these timepieces was moved to Switzerland and Swiss military watch companies with centuries' old reputations for precision. Like those before them, these Navigators also featured a matte black dial marked with white Arabic numerals 1-12, and with white indices. The new designs did not have white numerals at cardinal 3, 6, 9, and 12. Russian Martial Art And Kettlebell Training

Russian martial art training and kettlebell training involves elements of strength, flexibility and relaxation. Many would argue that speed and technique should also be included, but given that you have trained in all three of these disciplines, then speed will come naturally. Technique is immaterial: it is related to what you do, not how you do it.

Training, on the other hand, is how you do what you do. The what is irrelevant. It is the how that matters. A boxer cares not what a karate student does, but only what he himself does. A man or woman facing opponents is not concerned with what others can do, but only with they do themselves. It is not the 'what' but the 'how' that matters, and the 'how' is related to training, practice and knowledge.

The training of Russian martial artists is designed to improved the 'how'. Russian martial art has no need of pre-orchestrated movements or katas as Japanese and Chinese martial arts have. Much has been written about Russian martial arts and their means of attack and self defence, a lot of which is based on the popular view of the Russian Special Forces. Most Special Forces can employ the techniques used by their Russian counterparts, but it is the Russian methods of training that make the difference.

Pavel Tsatsouline, trainer to the Russian military and then the American Special Forces and other military personnel, teaches you the secrets of the super-strong and of attaining supreme martial arts power. He does this through use of Russian kettlebells and the tension and relaxation techniques used by the Cossacks who could slice a man from shoulder to buttocks with only a light one handed sabre.

The Cossacks trained by standing in a lake or river up to their waist and then slicing into the water with their sabres for hours on end. The secret was to be in total relaxation until the moment of strike when all the power of the body was concentrated in the one blow, and then reverting to total bodily relaxation immediately after. In that way, strength and stamina were maintained while the blow itself was imparted with the maximum possible strength of the whole body.

Flexibility is the true secret behind supreme martial art power, and the one bodily attribute that is most ignored and misunderstood by the majority of martial art exponents. Russian martial art techniques make best use of supreme strength and absolute power through the understanding of how to properly relax between blows. The supreme power of a martial art punch is used through a total understanding of the levers of the body, the muscles that move them and the relaxation that allows these muscles to exert maximum power to the levers.

A powerful punch is a rapid snap with maximum power and then total relaxation until the next punch. Russians are trained in dynamic relaxation exercises in all athletic training, and the fast and loose techniques they use are ideal for the rigors of absolute mastery in martial arts.

Russian martial art training and kettlebell training is not the theatrically disciplined art of the Chinese and Japanese, but a technique designed for maximum power and effect in attack and not just self defence. The use of the power of the human body can be maximized only by developing the supreme strength possible through kettlebell exercise, and the flexibility and relaxation techniques as taught by the master of the Russian martial art, Pavel Tsatsouline, master teacher of Russian and American Special Forces personnel.

Business Travel Destination Spotlight: Chicago

Chicago – the city that has it all - from a diverse population, world-class educational institutions, and sensational restaurants to a breathtaking skyline and countless museums. Transportation
Airports Serving Chicago
There are two airports that service the Chicago area – O’Hare International and Midway. O’Hare (ORD) is the larger of the two airports, servicing over 70 million travelers per year. Located 20 miles from downtown, there are many transportation options including public transport, taxis, shuttle services and hire cars.

O’Hare is an airport full of modern amenities and services. Recent upgrades have been completed at the International Terminal 5 and additional renovations are underway at Terminals 2 and 3. Expected completion date is later this year.

Midway (MDW) is significantly smaller than O’Hare, serving 17 million travelers per year, but is only 10 miles from downtown. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers transportation from Midway to downtown Chicago via the orange line buses. Other shuttles, regional buses and of course taxis and car services also offer transportation to downtown.

Midway has all of the amenities that you would expect from a major airport, including restaurants and gift shops. You can do some sight seeing in Concourse A where the Battle of Midway Memorial and an SBD Dauntless dive bomber are housed.

Getting Around Chicago
Getting around town is much easier in Chicago than in some other big cities. Renting a car is a good option if you need to visit different locations during your visit. The city has several major highways, but plan to avoid them from about 7 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 7 pm on weekdays – the traffic delays can be very frustrating. To avoid traffic delays, the train system in Chicago can get you almost anywhere in the city – making it another good choice for business travelers that are sticking to downtown.

The Loop is the heart of the downtown business district - named for the elevated train tracks that circle the area. All of the cities addresses begin at the corner of Sate and Madison streets in The Loop, making the streets easy to navigate. Each 400 increment in an address equals one half mile.

What to See
There is an endless list of things to see and do while in Chicago. If you like to shop, be sure to check out The Magnificent Mile, a one-mile stretch of shops between the Chicago River and Oak Street Beach. There are also numerous internationally known museums in the city. The Field Museum of Natural History is home to the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil and the Art Institute of Chicago is famous for its collection of French Impressionists art.

Traveling by a Private Jet

Traveling by private jet is convenient, and seems quite glamorous to many people. Private jet charter is a privilege and a luxury few people ever know or experience. Given these perceptions, you may be surprised to know that private jets and charter flight had very humble and even uncertain beginnings.

You may also be surprised to learn that jet-powered aircraft actually predate charter flight itself. The first jet-propelled aircraft was built nearly one hundred years ago by a Romanian inventor, Henri Coanda. An odd-looking aircraft, it was a type of thermojet that used a compressor instead of a propeller, which exhausted hot gases along the side of the machine at great velocity that actually provided a reactive force, pushing the plane forward. During its first and only flight in December of 1910, Coanda noticed that the burning gases had a tendency to hug the sides of the aircraft known to this day as the Coanda Effect,which is why both commercial and private jet engines are mounted either at the rear of the plane, or far out on the wings.

Similar engines were developed during the 1930s and 40s. The first practical, true turbojet the Heinkel He 178 actually flew in 1939. Due to the conservatism of German Air Force authorities however and political maneuvering within the German military, this jet fighter was never to see service. The first operational jet aircraft to see action was the Messerschmitt Me 262, which first flew in combat in April, 1944, little over a year before Germany’s defeat. After World War II, this technology was quickly employed by the U.S. Army Air Corps (later the Air Force) and Britains Royal Air Force. The British were actually the first to make jet engine technology available to the civilian market: the De Havilland Comet became the first commercial jet airliner around 1950. After nearly sixty years, many of these are still in service as transport planes for the Royal Air Force.

Business aircraft had been around since the early 1930s, but it wasn't until 1964 that the first small private jet was manufactured and offered to the general public. The Learjet 23 was actually based on a proposed fighter-jet design for the Swiss Air Force. The Swiss passed on the design, but William P. Lear saw its potential and with this aircraft, a new market for efficient, high-speed private jet charter was opened.

The Learjet 23 was followed by several more models, and competing companies entered the fray as well. Today, when you book your private jet charter, you’ll very likely be flying a Learjet 60, a Gulfstream IV or a Cessna Citation X, depending on your destination, needs and schedule.

What job is better fighter jet pilot in the navy, or fighter jet pilot in the RAF?

Because I understand that navy pilot will probably be more challenging because you will have to land on aircraft carriers, I also understand that the RAF will not receive the F-35 and only the royal navy will.
Any ex-RAF/Navy pilots out there that can help me out here?

I don't know about the better job but, clearly Naval aviators are the cream of the crop. They can do anything and RAF pilot can do plus they can land a 70 million dollar or more jet on a runway the size a American football field(100yards) in rough seas, at night, with little or no lights to guide them. That takes nerves of steel and a cool hand on the stick.
