Scrap Metal Dealer Waste Mangement Licensing Requirements

On May 1st 1994 a new waste management licensing act became law which required any operator who deposited, recovered or disposed of waste required a waste management licence (WML) or exemption. If you operated without either of these then you could be fined and sent to prison. A WML can be applied for and issued by the relevant regulatory authority usually SEPA or the EA.

When obtaining a licence, you are required to be a ‘fit and proper person' as well as being technically competent to do the job. A ‘fit and proper person' is someone without any environmental convictions, are technically competent and have taken all reasonable precautions to meet their licence requirements. A certificate of technical competence (COTC) is issued by the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB).

Metal recyclers do not face the full burden of waste legislation following heavy lobbying of government over the past 10 years. But they still face strict licensing controls and a less strict Duty of Care regime.

Metals recyclers in the UK either to have a licence to carry out their work or alternatively have to register for an exemption on grounds of size of business.

Over the past two years, and with the support of the metal recycling trade associations, the Environment Agency has been clamping down on unlicensed and non-exempt sites.

Licences issued under the Act are known as "Metal Recycling Site Licences". Licence conditions include security fencing, covered storage requirements, road and storage surfacing and drainage, sign and notice boards and other conditions.

A key element of the licensing and control system is Duty of Care. As a business, you have a duty to ensure that any waste you produce is handled safely and in accordance with the law. This is the ‘Duty of Care' and it applies to anyone who produces, imports, carries, keeps, treats or disposes of controlled waste from business or industry or acts as a waste broker in this respect. This involves the waste producer transferring a document to the waste disposer containing all relevant details about the waste.

But the practicalities of always obtaining this document and the fact that some suppliers might choose to go to merchants who did not enforce the rules rigorously prompted a change of heart on the part of the government in agreement with the Environment Agency which enforces the rules.

A concession was struck that the Environment Agency would not fully enforce the Duty of Care as far as the non-ferrous metal recycling industry in particular is concerned.

This concession was welcomed by the British Secondary Metals Association.

The Duty of Care rules apply to materials whether they are destined for recycling or disposal and the Environment Agency has said that the duty of care is the piece of legislation that links waste controls together linking waste with carriers.

There is now flexibility in the way the regulations are implemented for generally small loads of material. The Agency has given guidance saying that duty of care must be understood as a concept that requires all reasonable precautions to be taken so that waste, including metals, in the care of a business or carrier doesn't escape and is carried in a secure container.

When it is transferred to a registered broker, carrier, a business registered exempt and others there must be a description of that waste.

The agency accepts that it is clearly impractical to have a transfer note for every container of non-ferrous material, and if the way the notes are used allows the next person in the chain to be able to know what it is and handle it properly then the aim of the duty of care is in a large part being achieved.

Following the agreement with the British Secondary Metals Association earlier this year, the Agency will not generally take action especially as its resources have been focused on getting unlicensed or unregistered metal recycling sites into the licensing and exemption system.

The concessions on the duty of care apply to transactions where the total quantity of scrap metal being transferred does not exceed 1,500 kilogrammes. The transaction may cover a number of different metals but the total weight of the transfer must not be greater than 1,500 kg. This means that if the transfer weight of metals that are waste exceeds the 1,500 kg limit, then the waste transfer note must contain all the details as in the regulations.

How To Build Deck Railings

The deck on a house is a floored section that extends from the house and is usually roofless. It can be located at the back, the front or to the side of the house. Deck railings provide a deck it's design and uniqueness and are very important in keeping people protected in that, they are both practical and decorative. In being decorative, they are appealing elements adding style to a house and are purposeful as they enhance protection. It is generally essential for decks that are higher than thirty inches above the ground and also for stairs that comprise of five or over steps. The height of a deck railing typically ranges between thirty and forty inches although specific places have specific restrictions. Standard ‘builder deck' railings are the simplest types to make and set up. Deck railings contain a top rail and a bottom rail, side rails and may also comprise distended posts, balusters and hand rails. They come in a variety of designs and can be constructed from various materials including iron, aluminum, natural timber, wood composite materials and also transparent glass. They are readily available, but believe it or not, you can build a deck railing on our own. Are you curious? Here's how: Materials Necessary: 2 x 2 inches wood Carriage bolts 2 x 4 inches wood 2 x 6 inches wood Galvanized screws 1 can varnish stain Tools Necessary: Wood saw Electric drill Screwdriver Paintbrush Knife Directions: 1. Get rid of any wood or material that is connected to the deck so that you will locate the rim joist which is the outermost part of the flooring. 2. Use 2 x 6 inches wood to construct the upper railing and join it for the time being to the deck by using a screwdriver and galvanized screws. 3. Using your wood saw cut the 2 x 2 inches wood to the relevant height for the spindles. 4. Use the electric drill and make two holes into each spindle. One hole must be drilled about 1 ½ inches from the base of the deck. The next hole should be made 1 ½ inches from the top and the outside of the deck. These holes must be smaller than the carriage bolts. 5. For durability and firmness, bolt the spindles into position with the carriage bolts. 6. Cut the 2 x 4 inches wood with the saw to the correct lengths to make spindles. Make sure that they are identical lengths because any error will be visible. 7. Using your screwdriver, connect the pieces you cut to each spindle using the galvanized screws. 8. Permanently screw the railings to the deck at this stage. Screw through the bottom to raise the railing. 9. Use knife to pry open the tin of varnish stain. 10. Take paintbrush and slightly dip it into the tin of varnish stain to soak up a little. 11. Paint the railings by smearing even strokes with the paintbrush and continue until the entire railing is done. Tips and warnings: Always construct your deck railings in accordance with regulations regarding them in your region. Spindles must be spaced no more than nine inches apart for security. Carefully measure at each step to get a look that is as skilled as possible. Painting or staining the wood seals it to make it more durable. The railing should be about 4 inches high but allow extra length so that it flushes with the bottom outside section of the deck. The stairs leading to the deck must be in position to provide easy access to the deck. Choose a railing design that suits fits your budget and matches with the model of your house.

With more units to rent, any upkeep can come from the tenants rent, and still you will still have a steady income.

Passive income will do much for your portfolio, which you will need when it is time to do more apartment investing or to buy multi-family properties. Banks will look at you more favorably with a strong portfolio. There are also different tax breaks that will be available to you. There are many more incentives when you have passive income from commercial real estate, leading to more properties that will bring in still more passive income.

Car modifying is here to stay

Car customising and modifying has been around since the car was first invented, but really took off with the introduction of the original Mini.

This was a car people really took to their heart, seeing a raft of extras and aftermarket parts springing up on the market to suit every style of customisation.
From rally style lights to full wide arch bodykits, even the Cooper family who prepared engines for F1 saw the potential of this little car, rebuilding it and giving
rise to the Mini Copper, a car that is still an icon to this day. Car modifying and customising has came a long way since then, from uprated suspension,
engine parts, bodykits and light sets for almost any car you could imagine, giving birth to a trade worth billions in the UK alone.

You would be mistaken to think this was a young mans game, all car enthusiast have taken to car modifying with equal vigour. Classic cars have just as many modified parts available to them as the little Vauxhall Corsa or the old Citroen Saxo’s we are so used to seeing being driving by the teenagers today, covered in aftermarket parts, sporting in car entertainment systems that quite often cost more than the car they are installed in. This in its self has created a car culture of its own, the cruise scene.

People from all walks of life turn up in car parks all across the country to show off their modified pride and joy. Mazda RX-7’s, Honda Preludes, Nissan Skylines that have had ten thousand pounds worth of extras, from full bodykits, uprated suspension, bugger turbos, uprated engine internals, full interior re-trims, some of the latest technology crammed in them, satnavs, ear splitting sound systems, games consoles, in fact more things that you would ever expect to see in a car. There are the modifiers that only go for pure speed, who would rather strip bare the interior of their car to save weight rather than fill it with all sorts of ICE.

Cars like the little Honda Civic and Nissan Pulsar that modifiers have managed to sqeeze over 300 BHP from the engine, putting quite alot of super cars to shame, and costing a fraction of the cost. Even manufacturers have gotten in on the act, Volkswagen showing the world their modified Golf, with a mid mounted W12 650BHP engine wedged in where the back seats should be, borrowed from a Bentley. Renault with the equally insane V6 Clio, this too doing away with the rear seats in favour of a V6 power plant, giving this little car power that would only be seen in the likes of a Porsche 911.

Car modifying and customisation has created a class of its own, giving rise to a whole host of magazines like Max Power, Redline, Banzai, Fast Ford to name a few, as well as films such as Fast and Furious. Race tracks have also seen the rise of this car culture and have opened their doors to allow car enthusiasts the test their machines on a wide open racetrack, giving them the freedom to test the cars and their own reactions, in the safe setting of a real race track.

Car modifying is here to stay.

Installing Under Sink Water Purifiers

Most homeowners have experienced the following unfortunate scenario: You enter the kitchen or bath, turn on the faucet and out comes water filled with sediment or minerals. You can see the build-up over time on the water cup or toothbrush holder. Sometimes unseen chlorine and other distasteful chemicals are the culprit.

For a modest cost of about $50, you could have clean water instantly in the kitchen or bath. Installation is no more difficult than putting in a garbage disposal. The savings in not buying so much bottled water will quickly erase the cost.

For most models, the installation is pretty much the same.

Just disconnect the cold-water supply line underneath the sink. Be careful to use only the cold water line. Filters are not designed to work correctly with hot water.

Sometimes it’s attached with screw-tightening clamps similar to car water hoses. Sometimes, it’s a squeeze clamp that will require strong fingers or a good pair of pliers.

But that’s usually the easy part. If the hose has been attached for a long time, it will probably stick. Take care not just to jerk hard. You’ll split the hose off, requiring a lengthy and difficult removal of the remainder with a knife. Or, worse, you’ll bust off the nib the hose attaches to. Twist and pull moderately, and if necessary squirt something in the hose lip that will dissolve calcium carbonate and/or aluminum or copper oxide.

Clean off all the fittings really well. Sometimes ordinary cleaning solvent is enough. Other installations will require a little bit of gentle sanding. A clean surface is key to a dripless finish.

Now wind ample Teflon plumber’s tape around the nib. Never secure a hose with PVC glue or other adhesive. Someday you’ll have to replace the hose and it will be nearly impossible to get off without damaging the pipe. In any case, it would make the job ten times harder and longer.

Now for the filter.

The water filter fits between the cold-water supply and the faucet. Filters often use some kind of activated charcoal, a type of carbon that grabs the minerals, chlorine and other molecules on the way to the spigot. They sit inside a canister that opens up or pulls down so the filter can be changed every six months to a year. So, make sure to face the cannister in a way that doesn’t prevent that.

Flexible hose attaches to the cannister/filter housing and then onto the nib where the previous line was removed. They’re typically included with the water filter kit. Make sure not to kink them or even have too sharp a bend. That leads to blockage or cracking over time. Trim off the ends of the hose to prevent that.

Most hoses can be attached with simple compression fittings that also come with the standard kit. Hand tightening is often good enough. Make sure you don’t over-tighten them. That leads to cracked hoses near the fitting.

Cannisters are attached in a number of different ways. Sometimes a small ring attaches to the U-shaped pipe under the sink. Others are designed to attach to the wall with a mounting bracket. Just follow the instructions. Take care, though, when mounting on the wall to drive into a stud or to use good dry-wall screw holders. Cannisters full of water can weigh several pounds

Wet Kit - What is It?

Wet Kits (or wetline kits) are kits put into trucks or semi-trucks that have PTO (Power Take Off). Many different accessories are installed on trucks, like booms or cranes, and the kits’ hydraulic pump is activated by the truck's Power Take Off. The accessories need the hydraulic pump to operate.

There are different units in each wet kit. They consist of items such as the hydraulic hose and fittings, reservoirs or tanks, filters, control valves, pumps, and PTOs. Hydraulic fluid is sent through hoses and into cylinders once the PTO initiates the activity of the hydraulic pump. Once the hydraulic fluid gets into the cylinders, the PTO can raise the load or execute any of the other operations that you may desire. The discharged fluid is then returned to the reservoir and, continuing the closed cycle indefinitely, fluid is again sucked by the hydraulic pump.

You can buy wet kits from many different manufacturers. It is also possible for you to buy spare parts. Other types of wet kits/wetline kits available are:

1. Some wetline kits, also known as wet kits, are used for operating dumper trailers. These kinds are capable of producing pressure up to 3000psi. They are equipped with both a single acting cylinder and a control valve. Kits made to your specifications are also available.

2. Wetline kits for utility trailers are another option. These wetline kits use very little fluid and operate at very high pressures.

In addition to these, the market offers wetline kits for a variety of applications. These kits are available in a number of capacities.

The ability of these kits to sustain various applications rests on how much pressure is exerted by the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic fluid's flow capabilities. The increase in the reservoir's size matches the increase of the hydraulics’ fluids flow.

Installation

Virtually all wood dash kits come backed with automotive-grade 3M tape and a sheet of instructions, or schematic. After that, it is a simple "peel-&-stick" operation. Even still, here are the basic installation steps you may want to follow once you receive your wood dash kit:

4) In the event that it is cool outside (below 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit), you may use a blow-dryer to warm pieces. This will enable them to conform easier to your dash.

5) Peel back tape and stick pieces into place. For larger pieces, unpeel bottom-first when sticking. This will allow you to adjust as needed. When satisfied, simply peel away the remaining tape and adhere the rest of the piece.

6) Once content with positioning, press pieces into place firmly. "Thumb" them down for a tight, concise fitment.

Schuco Tin Toys

The internationally well known and loved German Company, Schuco, can be traced as far back as 1887, infact right back to the birth of one, Heinrich Muller.  As a teenager, Muller began making his own toys and pretty soon started working for another famous German toy company, Bing.  However, in 1912, Muller left the Bing Company and, together with Heinrich Schreyer (a local merchant), formed their own company, Schreyer & Co.  In 1921, this company became known as the now famous Schuco Company.

Schuco began by making small felt and plush figures and animals, but like all other German toy companies, like Steiff for example, the outbreak of the Fist World War halted their business.

However, once back in business, Schuco introduced it's Schuco-Patent-Motor-Car.  The great success of this product quickly gave way to Schuco producing a wonderful range of tinplate vehicles.  The Patent Car is powered by clockwork, but what really makes this tinplate car so very desirable is the fact that it "turns back from the edge", or,  in other words, the car will never fall from a table or play surface as, when it reaches the edge, it simply will not fall off - Amazing Isn't It !!  This incredible model, which we must not forget was made in the mid 1930's.  This idea was, as you can imagine greatly copied by many other toy companies, despite the fact that this model was 'patented'.

Once again, the outbreak of the Second World War stopped toy production at Schuco.  As early as 1946, the Schuco toy company had started to become a legend in the toy world and was talked about all over Europe and on both sides of the Atlantic.  Just like so many other German toy companies, such as Steiff, the toys produced in Germany had a quality which really were second to none and it was this great quality that was greatly impressing the American market.  Muller was personally responsible for all Schuco designs and he was also responsible for quality.  It is rumoured that Muller would throw each new model on the floor, to test it's resilience when the model was put into the hands of a child.

Tin Toys boomed in the late 1940's - 1950's, but then sadly, sales started to decline in the mid 1960's.  Tin toys started to be deemed as 'unsafe' for children, due to their sharp edges, but also a further contributory factor to the tin toy decline was the introduction of plastics to the toy world, which were both safer and more affordable.  Sadly then, Schuco went out of business in 1976.

In 1980, Gama (Georg Adam Mangold) who ironically was once a rival to the Shuco company, obtained the Schuco brand name and began creating reproductions of the old Schuco models.  In 1999, Schuco was sold to the Simba-Dickie Group (one of the largest toy companies in Europe).  Today Schuco's main aim is to re-establish the same quality as Schuco's past models.  They also tend to make reproductions of the tin toys that Schuco made iconic in the past.

Many grown-up's collect the old Schuco tin toys today, as they are small and extremely worthy works of art.  They certainly look amazing either shown as a collection, or as a single display item.  A Schuco tin toy model will almost certainly provoke a reaction from your friends, regardless of their age.

The condition of a Schuco tin model is, like so many other collectables, very important in terms of it's financial value, unused and also boxed items of course, being the ultimate.  However, sometimes a small amount of playwear, the odd dent or chip, adds a great amount of age history and character to a model.  Just like the old teddy bear that is age-worn, you wonder about the toy's history and this can sometimes add to the toy's desirability, depending of course on the collector.

There is always the option of having the model 'restored'.  Restoration such as having a repaint to body work will, almost always de-value an old model but then, on the plus-side some things are acceptable such as replacing a broken windscreen or repairing a clockwork spring, which leads us on to the Schuco Keys.  Owning an original Schuco tin toy, together with it's original key is always very desirable and, once again, adds to the model's value.  It really is down to the collector alone to decide whether or not he wants to collect just 'mint' models or whether he wants to collect 'used', perhaps like so many collectors he would prefer to seek a compromise.

Many toy companies around the world has indeed made really good tin toys and today's standards are very high, but setting aside modern replica tin toys, we find it highly unlikely that today's toys would even come close to the old Schuco models.

How many old and battered tinplate cars, for example, would still run?  After sixty years an old Schuco model will still run, infact it is very hard to find an old Schuco model that will not run.  Simply Amazing !!

Schuco tin toys is worthy of collectors.  They always have been and certainly always will be.

What Makes Resin Model Cars So Special?

The model car is ever in demand today as most people can't afford to do much of anything else. Gas is too high to go anywhere, so more and more families are staying home and taking part in the hobbies they had neglected with time. The more rare the model kit, the more it cost the individual. Resin cars are those model cars that are made out of this material. It's called resin of course, but what it is, is actually a plastic that is really a cast and not what used to be known as injection-molded. The Resin Kits don't cost as much as the kits whose materials are made out of polystyrene. But they are pretty expensive.

The quality at which they are developing them is the big determining factor as to how much they go for when you buy them off the shelf at the store of your choice. Not only is there a difference in prices for these model cars, but the different types of materials affects you the buyers as well. Those model cars made out of resin are different from those older types in the fact that there is more to do when you put them together. The resin material is more brittle, and when you sand this material, you should really wear a mask as the fumes are more toxic. When you put the model together, you might need different materials. This is due to the fact that the chemicals in the two seem to be different, and may require different glue as well as different paint. But the resin seems to be sturdier.

Companies have seen that their buyers are a bit more pleased with the resin cars. This is to say that, for once, a company listened to its buyers and created something that could help them both out. The cars hold up a lot longer. Plus, people who have made model building an addicting habit haven't been spending so much out of their pocket. It's a win-win situation for everyone. Of course, people using the resin cars have more work ahead of them, and should take more precautions with the chemical components they use to piece the kits together; they do enjoy a better overall experience. A good compromise for both parties involved, if I do say so myself, being a fan of putting these kits together.

Are Genius Made Or Born?

The main problem with the idea that we are a product of our genes and nothing else is that we are not born and kept in isolation in a bubble for the rest of our lives.  As human beings we arrive with a survival kit, but we grow and develop in a process of constant interaction with our environment.  Is it nature or nurture that predicts our future?  For the record, all the current indications are that it is just too simple to say we are born with what we get and that’s the end of the story. 

 

What would be the outcome of our brain development if we didn’t have any social contact from the time we were born?  Looking at cases where children who have been discovered who were raised with very little social interaction, brain development within these children, including speech and language were severely impaired.  Providing children with a nurturing, supportive and socially interactive environment is not just good for their self-esteem, emotional development and overall well being it is especially important for their cognitive brain function and intellectual development.  Is nature or nurture the determinant of genius?  Environment cannot be ignored in human development for the fact that the genes we inherit are finite, whereas the brain’s ability to develop billions of new connections between the cells it is born with is infinite.  Education, knowledge, learning and experiences, all of these will greatly influence the number of new connections each of our brains will make over our lifetime.

 

In the past, we were told that we are born with a certain number of brain cells and if you do not use your gray cells, you will lose them.  What scientists discovered recently is that our brain grows new cells or neurons all the time and as with our existing brain cells, the trick is to stimulate them to prevent them from dying off.  This may not seem like a great discovery but in reality, it has huge implications.  It changes everything.  What we are born with matters, but what we do with it matters even more.

 

So are the brains of geniuses different from everybody else? The problem with this question is that we don’t know if there is such a thing as atypical genius brain.  This is because there is a lack of genius brains for scientists to tinker with.  Another problem is that the chances of a person being recognized as one is increased by the number of years they have been dead.

 

Einstein  left his brain to science and one of the most notable things about Einstein’s brain is its dense network of connectivity in relation to the brains of other people his age.  In other words, his brain was very well wired up.  But, and this is a big but, whether Einstein’s brain was born like this, or whether it developed to become like this over time, via  his interaction with his environment, a life filled with research and learning, is something no one knows for certain. This is because no one knows what his brain looked like when he was born. 

When you remove all the hype and mystery surrounding a genius, you are left with a simple fact.  All known genius began their journey in the world just like any other baby.  They arrived in a safe environment with a brain and a body hungry for development.  If you don’t know if your child is a genius or not, you can make the odds in his favor by adopting early childhood development and  training.  Such training take mere minutes a day and the effects last a lifetime.  Yes your baby can read much earlier and learn math much faster if you employ the proper tools without the stress to both mother and child.  Such skills will enhance the child’s  learning ability and will last a lifetime.
