Continuing Education In Commercial Lumber

Commercial lumber is basically any lumber traded in the free market system, bought or sold at either the retail or wholesale level.  It comes in many forms, types and species, and is generally graded into categories of quality to enable users to select the quality best suited for their purposes.

The grading of commercial lumber is based upon the characteristics and features that may lower its strength, durability or appearance.  Knots, checks and pitch pockets are some of the visual features that are a natural part of trees.  While those grades that make up the vast majority of commercial lumber can contain numerous knots and other features, some grades are virtually free of such features.

Lumber can be divided into two major categories: hardwood and softwood.  Hardwood lumber is primarily used for remanufacturing into furniture, flooring, paneling, moulding, cabinetry and other millwork.  Softwood lumber is primarily used for construction work.

Hardwood lumber can be graded into the three main categories of factory lumber, dimensioned lumber and finished products.

There are several grades of hardwood factory lumber.  The best grade is known as "FAS"; the second-best grade is "FIF"; and the third-best grade is called "Selects".  These grades are followed by "No. 1 Common", "No. 2A Common", No. 2B Common", "Sound Wormy", "No. 3A Common" and "No. 3B Common".  Hardwood lumber comes in standard lengths of one foot increments ranging from four feet to sixteen feet in length.  Standard thicknesses are in either 1/8 inch or 1/2 inch increments ranging from 3/16 inch to 3-3/4 thicknesses.  Hardwood lumber is manufactured to random widths as the grades do not specify standard widths.

Dimensioned hardwood lumber, also known as "hardwood dimension stock" or "dimension parts", is stock that has been processed into specific lengths, widths and thicknesses and can be either semi-machined or completely machined products.  These products are usually kiln-dried and graded into the three main classes of "hardwood dimension parts", "rough solid kiln-dried squares" and "surfaced solid kiln-dried squares".

Finished hardwood market products are graded in finished form and generally require no further processing.  Examples of finished products include siding, stair treads and risers, trim and moulding, construction boards and timbers, and hardwood flooring.  Of these hardwood flooring is probably the highest volume product on the market.

Softwood lumber has been used for many years as the primary raw material for use in construction and manufacturing.  It is produced in a wide variety of products and from a wide variety of species.  Softwood lumber can be classified by its species, grade and form of manufacture, and can be graded into the three main use categories of yard lumber, structural lumber, and factory and shop lumber.

Yard lumber can be further graded into "Select" and "Common" classes.  Select lumber is usually not graded according to strength but rather according to appearance, as it is generally intended to receive natural or paint finishes.  Common lumber is also not usually graded for stress, is of lower appearance than the Select grade, but is suitable for light construction and utility uses.

Structural lumber is almost always produced in standard dimensional sizes, graded for stress and strength, and assigned allowable structural properties.  As the name implies, structural lumber is used as structural members in construction.

Factory and Shop lumber comes in a wide variety of species, sizes and grades of softwood and is typically the raw material for many different secondary manufacturing uses where appearance and finishing characteristics as well as physical properties are important, such as trim moulding and cabinet stock.

Various inspection bureaus and grading agencies typically supervise the grading processes at lumber mills, provide re-inspection services and write grading rules for the products and species they represent.

Am going to make an HO DCC set up, but have one good Bachman DC loco. Am new to this hobby after 45 year break.

Older DC loco's are candidates for conversion to DCC. Normally, you'll head to your hobby-shop and buy a DCC-decoder (small package with 9 wires), and the paperwork IN the decoder packaging will include full instructions.

It will involve electrically "disconnecting" the motor from the wheels and lights from the wheels, then soldering the wires to their appropriate points.

Model Railroader magazine frequently print articles on how to do this in the magazine. You can also buy the book / pamphlet "DCC Made Easy" ($14.95 USD) from Kalmback Publishing. It has a nice chapter on "Decoder Installations". ( http://kalmbachcatalog.stores.yahoo.net/12242.html )

Honestly, to ANYONE getting into (or back into) the hobby, I STRONGLY suggest getting a subscription to "Model Railroading" magazine (http://www.trains.com/mrr/) , and buying several of the Kalmback books, including "Realistic Operations" and "Layouts for Realistic Operations".

These materials are inexpensive, and give you a chance to read about OTHER peoples errors in design, wiring, etc... much cheaper than making them yourself.

The Origin and History of Chess

The origin of chess, shrouded in the mists of history, depends very much on one`s own perspective. We cannot, unfortunately, trace the history of chess with a bold black line that leads from the game as we know it today, to a point in the past where we can unambiguously say, “Uh ha! This is where it began!” Many ancient cultures including the Greeks, Chinese, Indians, Persians, and Arabs have staked their claims on the game`s antecedents, if not to the game itself. It is the purpose of this article to bring order out of the historical clutter surrounding the origin of chess, and to give you, the interested reader, a clear idea of its line of development.

 

As already intimated, it is no surprise that chess did not spring fully loaded with its pieces, boards, and rules from its point of origin to what we have today without a meandering style of evolutionary development. Recent scholarship on the history of chess would indicate that the Chinese emperor, Wu Ti (560-578), developed a game of divination called, hsiang ch`i , which is the ancient Chinese word for chess. The chessmen and their moves were patterned after the moon, planets, constellations, and the sun. This divinatory game may well have been the common ancestor of modern day Chinese chess-still widely played, and the game that took the western world, and indeed the entire world by storm. However, even taking the Chinese contributions into account, most scholars by a wide consensus place the origin of chess, at least in its modern beginnings, in India. We shall now see why this is so.

 

As you probably already have suspected, there is not a great deal of direct evidence for the primacy of India, for being the country of origin of chess. There is, however, a strong circumstantial case to be made. Thoughtful observers on the history of chess place its modern origins in northern India in about the fifth or sixth centuries A.D. Following the Arabic conquest of Persia, in the 7th century A.D. several of the leading Muslim scholars found chess already there, and commented that it had made its way to Persia from India. Indeed, the Persians themselves seem to support this view. In the Chatrang-namak, a series of Persian stories written in the early seventh century, chess is depicted as having arrived in Persia by way of India. But, how did Indian chess make its way to Persia? Probably through the normal activities of trade and other forms of cultural contact. By the time that the game arrived in Persia-it should be stated that there were variations of it, such as the four way game called chaturanga –not just one type, a certain type of it was being played on a 64 square board, with two players. If one were to take the linguistic evidence into consideration, then consider the following. Arabic for chess is, shatranj, which in turn comes from the Persian, chatrang, which in turn comes from the Indian (Sanskrit), chaturanga, a clear line leading back to India. Can we now say definitively where chess originated? No, but currently available evidence does seem to indicate northern India in the fifth and sixth centuries A.D.

 

So, for the moment, the origin and history of chess must remain inconclusive, as are so many things in human affairs. Maybe some day, with new discoveries, we shall know for certain.

The history of the Liverpool football kit

After the club came into existence in 1892 wearing a blue and white halved shirt. The kit was made to make some distinction between themselves and Everton who were playing in various strips including Salmon Pink or Ruby Red.  Just inside the 1900s the two clubs switched to their more commonly known kits.  Everton returned to their original colours of blue and white whilst Liverpool switched to a red kit.

In the early 1900s the reds turned out in all red shirts with long white shorts and red socks.  There were a couple of variations in the early years towards more white featuring in the top but this never lasted for any length of time.

After the first World War the reds were seen in red tops with white shorts and black socks.  Though just before the war they changed their kit whereby a Red Stripe was put on the shorts and the socks were rimmed in red and white.  Just before Bill Shankly’s days at Anfield the socks were more white but the top remained red and the stripe on the shorts remained.

It was during Bill Shankly’s days though that the kit of today was born.  He decided that the players would look even bigger and more importantly more intimidating to the opposition if the players changed their shorts to all red ones.  At this point he threw a pair of all red shorts at the Collosus - Ron Yeats and told him to put them on.  As soon as he put them on he said straight away how he looked eight feet tall and players would be scared of him.  At this point Ian St John suggested that he go all the way and give him red socks as well.  The comment was met with open arms by the great man and the all red kit was born.

In 1965 the reds played the FA Cup Final in their all red kit and for the first time in their history picked up the FA Cup.  They then embarked on their show of steel for years to come and became hugely successful with it.  In the 1970s Umbro designed an excellent kit off all red with a little white v-neck collar and small white cuffs.  A golden liver bird with the initials LFC were placed over the heart.  It's this strip that the reds won their first European cup in Rome 1977.  The away kits of the time where the reverse scenario of white shirts and red v-neck collar.  For the occasions of playing teams like Sunderland the team would play in all yellow.

It was this home shirt which saw the very first sponsorship deal placed on it when Hitachi started sponsoring the team in 1977.  The kit didn't really start changing until the early 80's though when the first of the now regular changes happened.  A white pinstripe was introduced by Umbro ready for the last of the European cup wins in Rome 1984.  By this time the sponsorship had changed over to Crown Paints and had become more commonplace from the original days of only been worn if the teams were not being featured on TV.  In the same period of time the away kit had become all yellow as occasionally worn earlier in the 1970s.  The alterations had to come against Watford when the team combined three kits together with a red top, black shorts and yellow socks.

At the start of the 1985-86 season the club changed their kit manufacturer to Adidas whilst retaining the Crown Paints sponsorship.  The kit was changed back to more red in the kit at this point and remained for a couple of years.  In 1985-86 the reds wore all white when traveling away from home.  By 1988 the kit was altered to a round necked collar.  The away kit for this season became all silver with red trim and despite the recent whinges from Man United the team found each other very easily.  This kit was changed a year later with the change of sponsor from Crown Paints to Candy.  The sponsorship of Candy didn't last too many years and was altered to Carlsberg.  However before the kit changed sponsor Adidas made what is often known as the bird droppings kit when they introduces flashes of white all over the top.  They introduced a variation of the silver kit as well when they introduced one which was silver and white mini diamonds.   Around the time of the clubs centenary Adidas made the kit all red again but introduced three flashes across the right shoulder.  This remained past the centenary year and into the Carlsberg sponsorship.  The year before the centenary the away kit also became green for the first time and in a similar way to the home kit it was all green with three white adidas flashes on the shoulder and shorts.

After the centenary year of 1992 the kit was changed again whereby the three stripes on one shoulder were moved to three stripes on either side of the shirt going diagonally upwards from the hips.  The away kit of this time was white body with green sleeves and black flashes from each hip with black shorts.  The final kit of the Adidas deal came when they tried to move back to kits of the past with a deep red kit and thick white collar with plan red shorts and socks.  The away kit of the time was to become green and white quarters with a granddad type collar and green shorts.  It was one of Adidas' better away kits of the time.  During this time the reds also had a third kit for odd games off gold with black badges through it all and looked awful.

Reebok then took over the kit manufacturing for the club until they merged with Adidas and the club returned to wearing Adidas kits.   They started with an all red top and a white fold over collar before reverting to an older tradition top of all read with a rounded white collar like the 60s although much lighter in colour.  Reebok also introduced a whole number of away kits since they took over and sadly introduced more and more blue into the away kits.  The first away kit was Ecru in colour with black shorts but only lasted a year as first away kit when it was replaced with an all yellow kit and a tiny bit of blue.  It was then replaced one year later with a white top and a red stripe down the sleeve but sadly navy shorts.  This was in turn replaced a year on with a green kit and blue shorts.  The top had a diagonal blue and white stripe.  

Reebok continued to change the away kit year on year but then used the previous season's away kit as a third shirt for a year.  This brought the idea that a kit would last two seasons.

In the summer of 2006 the Reds reverted back to Adidas for kit manufacture and by this time they were in full swing for three kits. The third kit was now classed as a European kit which changed once a year and the away shirt followed suit too.

Kids and Magazines - a Growing Trend

Looking for something special for your kids this year? One of the hottest new kid gift ideas this holiday season is a magazine subscription. Magazines, always a staple with adults, have been moving into the children's markets in droves. Where once there were a couple of magazines aimed at children, there are now dozens to choose from, and they're aimed at kids in every age group with all sorts of interests.

When I was growing up in the 60s, there was essentially one children's magazine - Highlights for Children. As you got older, there were a few more choices aimed at teens and very gender specific - if you were a boy, someone was bound to get you a subscription to Boys' Life, especially if you were a Boy Scout. If you were a girl, you had a wider choice - Seventeen for the "fashionista" (long before the term was coined) and Teen for us "regular girls". Of course, the biggest category of magazines aimed at teen girls was the fanzines - Tiger Beat and their ilk, featuring interviews with the hot boys and gatefold posters of our favorite boy bands and teen heartthrobs.

Of course, there was Scholastic Magazine, delivered to classrooms around the country for use in education about current events, but that hardly counted because, well, it might as well have been a textbook. Other than that, magazines aimed specifically at the children and youth market were relatively rare - which may account for the longevity of the good children's magazines - Boys' Life has been around since 1911, and Highlights for Children almost qualifies for the senior citizen discount.

Over the last twenty years or so, the face of children's magazines has completely changed. These days, whatever your children's interests, there's probably a magazine aimed directly at them. There are magazines for every age group, from six months old on up. The older your children are the wider your choice of magazines is that they might like. National Wildlife Federation publishes a line of magazines for kids of all ages, including Wild Animal Babies for toddlers, Your Big Backyard for preschoolers through the primary grades and Ranger Rick for kids 7 and up. The publishers of Cricket, aimed at 9 to 14 year olds, also offer BabyBug, a sturdy cardboard magazine just for babies so that now, even the littlest camper in the house has his or her own magazine for reading.

And then there are the special interest magazines, most aimed at children in the 8 to 16 year old age group. There are magazines for young horse lovers, for anime collectors and video game enthusiasts, for cheerleaders and gymnasts - if there's a special interest, there is probably a magazine that addresses it. Young writers have a choice of magazines that are written "by kids for kids", such as New Moon, a magazine that features reader submissions from young girls.

The old standbys are still at the top of the lists, but there are dozens of new titles from which you can choose.
