The sovereign nation of Japan should be concerned. Its economy, recently recorded its sharpest contraction in three and half decades for the October –December quarter of 2008. It appears Japan is facing its worst economic crisis since the end of the Second World War. The dismal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data prompted government officials as well as the ruling coalition law makers to study the possibility of a fresh economic stimulus package. The slow down in the world's second largest economy is larger than that being experienced in the United States and Europe.

Export dependency:

Japan has become more dependent on sales abroad for its growth over the last decade.

A total of 33 publicly traded companies went out of business in 2008, the most in a post war period. For 2008 as a whole, corporate bankruptcies rose 11percent, the most in eight years.

Political issues:

The current Prime Minister Taro Aso has a divided parliament and a fractured ruling party, which makes him vulnerable in the opinion polls.

The Finance minister (Mr.Nakagawa) resignation amid lawmakers accusation of an embarrassing drunkenness at a recent G7 (group of seven) briefing has further damaged Taro Aso's administration.

He was in charge of the finance ministry and banking supervision post. A close ally of the prime minister, his resignation could provide a serious blow to the Taro Aso's tenure. The latest opinion poll suggests fewer than 10 percent of the people support Taro Aso, who must call a general election by September.

Quagmire on monetary policy:

With its key rate close to zero, further cut in interest rate will do little to boost growth but should show the central banks commitment to shoring up the economy. On the other hand a reduction on rates would make it unprofitable for investors to trade in the already impaired money market.

Funding challenges for companies:

The Central Bank of Japan has taken some monetary measures to ease funding for companies. Recent statement from the governor of the central bank, suggest the economy is expected to remain in a severe state next quarter, and companies are expected to continue struggling in obtaining financing, as investors shun risk. According to the governor "we implemented these measures to ease concerns companies are having about funding. We have to assume that conditions for corporate financing will remain very severe."

Confidence disintegrating amongst households:

Sentiment is close to the lowest level in at least 26 yrs. Domestic demand looking extremely weak with the fear of deflation resurfacing.

The economy is in a terrible shape and hope of a recovery in the interim is doubtful. This country is "behind the curve". Japans economy slipped into recession, its first in seven years in the third quarter of last year. This is deepening as evidence shows the economy's recession is the worst in 60 years. The best one can hope for in the next few quarters is to see a cessation in slow down. For Japan to recover, the United States and Chinese economies will have to take off first.

Investors should be pricing in a recession that could last longer than previously expected.

Dare & Live, An Untold World War Ii Story Of Guerrilla Resistance Against The Japanese Army In Negros Islands, Philippines

M/Sgt Jorge G. Herrera, Jr. discovered just what kind of a soldier he was when the Imperial Japanese Forces invaded Negros Islands in the Philippines during World War II. His heroic tale can now be told in the exciting new book, "Dare & Live."

The superior Imperial Japanese Forces overrun the spirited defenses that the combined United States and Philippine Commonwealth Government Armies put up in the battles for Bataan and the Island fortress of Corrigedor. The US-Philippines defenses crumbled against the onslaught of superiority of numbers of the Japanese soldiers, the naval and aerial bombardments. The valiant defenders had only one option: surrender. The Japanese Forces went on mopping operations on the more than 1,700 islands and islets of the Philippine Archiepelago. The Island defenders under orders of the Military High Command in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, gave up resistance.

In Negros Islands of central Philippines, M/Sgt Jorge G. Herrera vowed he would never surrender to the Japanese Army; so he gathered 3 Filipinos and they started the recruiment and training of other Guerrilla Soldiers. The Japanese Army cordoned Bacolod City, the capital of Negros islands where the US and Filipino surrenderees were imprisoned. The Japanese soldiers guarded every entrances and exits of the City, still M/Sgt Herrera escaped from the heavily-guarded City under the very noses of the Japanese Army sentinels.

It is worth reading the whole story of Dare & Live and obtain the backgrounds that equipped M/Sgt Herrera in his decision of fighting the whole Japanese Army that occupied Negros Islands for three long years of World War II.

It is a wonder how M/Sgt Herrera secured arms and ammunitions when the Japanese Army divested all US and Filipino Soldiers upon their surrender, suspected as non-surrenderees and killed anyone caught in possession of weapons. Herrera went on to recruit and train over a hundred soldiers and armed most of them. He established a Bivouac at the mountain sides of Negros Islands and equipped his hideout with telephone communication for fast intelligence. He staged many ambushes against the Japanese soldiers and was an only Filipino Guerrilla Leader who captured, alive, 21 Japanese soldiers in one ambush encounter. To try to capture him, the Japanese army even hired a Filipina Spy and sent her on a secret mission to entrap M/Sgt Herrera. How the Filipino Guerrilla Fighters fought the Japanese soldiers in Negros Islands during the three long years of World War II, was akin to how the Terrorist mounted resistance against the United States Army in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The new management buzzword appears to be "Engagement," and like most management buzzwords there are many worthy people sitting down to educate the rest of us about what engagement is.

What is odd though is that while everybody seems very keen to tell us what it is or how to measure it, nobody appears to know what to do to produce it.

 Perhaps the easiest thing to do is to look first at what managers do to their workforces that prevents them from engaging.

They tell people what to do, they don't listen to their workforce, they don't recognise what they do and they don't support them.

 Bob Nelson, the author of "Keeping Up In A Down Economy" says that he is convinced that each employee has one $50,000 idea and that it is the job of the manager to engage the employee to find this idea.

 Experience suggests that searching for that one idea worth $50,000 is a very one dimensional way of looking at the value of engagement.

 We have found that the ideas of each employee are worth way more than $50,000 but finding them is not a search for a single big idea, it is instead the result of creating the environment that allows a continuous flow of ideas from the workforce,

 On a drilling rig in the North Sea, which had been operating for 25 years, there was no record of any ideas having been implemented as a result of input from the drilling crew.

None at all!

 In a single year the emphasis of management changed from telling the drilling crews what to do, to asking them what they needed to do their jobs better. A transformation from "Directive" to "Consultative" management.

 During that year 403 ideas were collected from a workforce of 50 men.

 That is only eight ideas per man.

 The way those ideas were collected and how they were used was the change that allowed the crews to engage.

 Of the ideas collected fifty percent were implemented and of those a further fifty percent, (twenty five percent of the total collected) could be said to add a measurable financial value to the operation, the remainder being safety related.

 The value added of these one hundred ideas for that year was £3,9 Million.

That means the average value of each idea was nearly £40,000. or a value added of £100,000 for each member of the crew.

 The ideas collected that year included some big hitters as Bob Nelson suggested, but in general the value was added by the cumulative effect of many small ideas that came from a transformation in the way that the crew felt about what they did.

 They had become engaged.

 Could a lack of engagement be anything to do with the recent problems of Toyota. Their recalls appeared to be restricted to cars built in the West. The difference between the number of ideas collected in Japan per employee (167 per annum) was significantly greater than the number collected from the equivalent worker in the West (1.1 per annum). Could the answer to their quality problems lie in the uncollected ideas of the Western workforce that Western management do not know how to collect or understand the value of.

 Since commenting on this data we were contacted by John Grover, an ex employee of Ford UK who now runs his own training consultancy. John said in support of the above,

 "In Masaaki Imai's book "Kaisen" he says that Matsushita Electrical (National Panasonic) won the prize for the most suggestions made by employees in a year –

For around 200,000 employees they made 6.3 million suggestions. 

While at Ford UK I used this statistic on a training course.

One delegate told me that he had tried to make a suggestion once, about halfway through the year - he told me that he looked at the numbering in the HR Suggestions Log and saw that his was suggestion number 12 for that year!

On a site of 2500 employees that equates to 1 suggestion per year for every 200 employees!"

 If we equate the number of ideas for improvement submitted at the Ford plant with those of National Panasonic we get a ratio of 6,000:1 in favour of the Japanese company.

 What we are considering here is that there is a link between the way that people feel about what they do and the quality of their work. When people are proud of what they do they become engaged, they actively seek ways to become better at what they do and this is reflected in the number of suggestions or ideas for improvement that they submit.

 Gathering these suggestions and what is done with them is a key to producing the environment that allows the workforce to engage.

In the high-stakes race to catch Apple Inc.'s hit iPad, the Android operating system that Google Inc. popularized in tablet pc is emerging as an early front-runner. The Android tablets are coming and this time Apple won't have a big head start.

The big difference with the Android ipad army is that the Apple iPad doesn't have much of a head start. Apple's iPhone had a few years on the first Android device. Google's Android platform is growing quickly, but isn't likely to catch the iPhone in terms of smartphone market share any time soon. Google's Android will be a solid No. 3 in smartphones.

However, I expect some rather more expensive devices will be shown at this week's Computex trade show in Taiwan, starting with MSI's Wind Pad 110, which has an ARM processor running Google's Android mobile phone operating system. Acer, Dell and Lenovo are also tipped to enter the market at some point.

Animal Models for Therapeutic Strategies

Model organisms have long been a mainstay of basic and applied research in the life sciences. Among model organisms, it is model animals that have had a central place in medical research and in pharmaceutical and biotechnology company research, including drug discovery, preclinical studies, and toxicology. Although pharmaceutical companies have long employed animal models based on such mammalian species as mice and rats, dogs, cats, pigs, and primates, more recently the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry has also adopted several invertebrate and lower vertebrate animal models that have emerged from academic laboratories. These animal models include the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, the fruit fly Drosophila, and the zebrafish. The adoption of invertebrate and zebrafish animal models by industry has been driven by the advent of genomics, especially the finding that not only genes, but also pathways, tend to be conserved during evolution.

Researchers use animal models in basic research, in developing new therapeutic strategies for treating human diseases, and in drug discovery research (including target identification and validation, drug screening and lead optimization, and toxicity and safety screening), as well as in preclinical studies of drug safety and efficacy. The use of animal models in developing novel therapeutic strategies for human diseases overlaps with basic research that uses animal models to understand physiological and disease pathways. But its aim is to achieve knowledge of pathways and targets in a disease that leads to the development of new paradigms for discovery and development of drugs or other therapeutics. It thus also overlaps with use of animal models in drug discovery. The use of animal models in development of novel therapeutic strategies is the main emphasis of this report.

The creation of new animal models is an important part of animal-based therapeutic strategy research. A major reason why the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry needs new animal models is because poorly predictive animal models are a major cause of drug attrition during development. This is especially true in therapeutic areas (e.g., oncology and central nervous system [CNS] disease) in which animal models are the most unpredictive. Due to the poor predictivity of many animal models, some researchers would like to work with "human models" based on induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. This early stage technology may allow researchers to develop disease models based on cells from people with such genetically determined diseases as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS),
Executive Summary etc., which more faithfully model the cellular basis of these diseases than animal models. However, most human diseases involve interactions between multiple organs and tissues. Researchers therefore need to continue to use animal models, which are whole, living systems that model physiology—not just cell and molecular biology. Cellular models based on iPS will be used in screening (which may in some cases reduce the numbers of animals needed in a drug discovery program) and to provide information on human disease pathways to supplement information derived from studies with animal models. Information derived from cellular models, and in some cases the cells themselves, may also be used to design new animal models to more faithfully model human diseases.

The final section of Chapter 1 discusses the issue of animal welfare, which is an important consideration in research involving animals. The United States and various European countries, as well as other jurisdictions (national and local), have sets of animal welfare regulations. Central to these regulations is implementation of the 3Rs (Reduction, Refinement, and Replacement.) Academic and corporate research organizations have been incorporating these regulations into their research practices.

However, some types of animal research, especially research involving nonhuman primates, are particularly controversial. Moreover, animal rights activists have had their impact on the practice of animal research, especially in Europe.

The absolutely essential need for animal research for progress in medical science and healthcare is well proven, and researchers and the general public generally support animal research. However, there is an increasing concern for animal welfare, including pressure for research organizations to find ways to reduce the numbers of vertebrate animals used in research. There is also the increasing need for researchers and their organizations to foster open engagement with the public and policy-makers to promote the value of animal research and discuss animal welfare issues.

Chapters 2 through 7 each focus on a particular type of animal model. Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 6 focus on C. elegans, Drosophila, the zebrafish, and the mouse, respectively. Each chapter includes case studies of the use of each of these established animal models in developing novel therapeutic strategies for human disease. Chapters 5 and 7 focus on emerging animal models for use in drug discovery and development of new therapeutic strategies, the African clawed toad Xenopus tropicalis (Chapter 5) and emerging mammalian animal models (Chapter 7). Each of these two chapters focuses on technological developments now in progress to develop tractable animal models based on these organisms for use in drug discovery research. Chapter 7, in addition to the development of model systems based on non-rodent mammals (mainly pigs, ferrets, and marmosets), includes a discussion of the reemergence of the laboratory rat as an animal model. The rat, despite its important uses in physiological research, in studies involving surgery, and in other types of studies, has been eclipsed by the mouse in the post-genomic era. However, it is now "reemerging" as the result of new technologies (e.g., the sequencing of the rat genome and the construction of knockout rats via various novel gene-targeting technologies) and collaborations. Some Animal Models for Therapeutic Strategies of these technologies are also being applied to the development of nonrodent mammalian models.

Chapter 8 discusses the use of computer models and translational biomarkers in helping researchers to more effectively move from preclinical animal studies to human clinical trials. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology company researchers have been increasingly applying pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling to all stages of drug development. This especially includes moving from preclinical animal studies to human clinical trials. These models, as well as biophysical models such as those developed by Novartis and physiological models such as those developed by Entelos, can help researchers more effectively use animal model data in the design of clinical trials. In particular, they can help researchers reduce drug attrition in clinical trials due to suboptimal dosing.

Entelos' virtual NOD mouse model for type 1 diabetes can be described as a "virtual animal model." This mathematical model is made possible by the extensive studies that have been carried out over 30 years with the living NOD mouse, and the acceptance by the diabetes research community of the usefulness of this mouse model and its relatively faithful modeling of human disease. The virtual NOD mouse is designed to help researchers design more effective animal studies using fewer animals, and hopefully to design more effective and successful clinical trials of agents designed to prevent progression to type 1 diabetes. Nevertheless, the usefulness of the virtual NOD mouse in enabling researchers to discover innovative drugs that achieve proof of concept in clinical trials, let alone reach the market, remains to be confirmed.

Chapter 6, which focuses on the mouse, concludes with a discussion of the issue of developing more predictive animal models of drug efficacy, specifically more predictive mammalian models. The two main reasons for researchers' difficulties in producing predictive mouse models are 1) differences between the mouse and humans, and 2) major unknown factors in disease biology. These unknown factors have been revealed, for example, by studies in human genetics showing that common variants do not account for most of the heritability of disease, the discovery of the role of copy number variation and of non-coding DNA sequences in human disease determination, and the discovery in recent years of new layers of cellular regulation based on small regulatory RNAs and epigenetics. Although these factors make developing predictive animal models difficult, researchers can use animal models to learn about unknown or poorly understood areas of disease biology. This is expected to lead to the development of improved animal models and the development of new therapeutic strategies and drugs.

Researchers can also bridge some of the differences between the mouse and humans by creating humanized mouse models. In some cases, other mammalian species may be better models for certain diseases (e.g., rats for cardiovascular diseases, pigs and ferrets for cystic fibrosis) than the mouse. As discussed in Chapter 7, there are new technologies for producing gene-modified disease models based on these mammalian species.

Developing animal models that are more predictive of efficacy is an iterative process. But progress is being made, as researchers apply new knowledge and experimental approaches Executive Summary in elucidating the biology of particular diseases to creation of animal models. Researchers developing new drugs for complex diseases are well advised to test drugs in more than one animal model and in mouse strains of different genetic backgrounds. HO Scale Trains: Model Trains That Use The HO Scale

Model trains, as well as any other replica of something that exists in real life, require a scale so as to multiply the dimensions of the train that they represent. Otherwise, they would look out of proportion.

A scale is measured by two numbers, separated by a colon. The initial number of a scale tells us the equivalent of the model train. For model trains that are smaller than the trains they represent, this number is always one. The second number typifies how the 1st number would translate to the dimensions of an actual train. So, let us take for example a scale of 1:20. That implies that if something measures 1 inch on a model train, it would measure 20 inches on the real train.

HO scale trains are simply model trains that use the HO scale, which is the most common scale in nations where English is spoken.

The confusion started because the O scale, which is the scale HO was modeled after, was originally called 0 scale (as in the number zero).
