America's Very First Aircraft Carrier

here have been many great naval warfare ships over the history of the U.S. Navy. Many aircraft carriers went on to great distinction especially in the heroic battles that were part of World War II Naval warfare history. Names like the Lexington, the Saratoga, the Yorktown and the Enterprise fill the history books of great warships of World War 2 naval warfare. But the humble USS Langley has a long and distinguished career that included becoming the first ship to be retrofitted into an aircraft carrier that make the Langley worth of its own place in U.S. Naval history as well.

The Langley actually started out as the USS Jupiter when it was first commissioned in 1911. The Jupiter was a collier level ship and once it was put into action, it spent some time South America helping to establish a military presence during the difficult Veracruz crisis in 1914. But once that tension passed, the Jupiter got its first historic distinction of becoming the first ship to go through the Panama Canal from west to east. This was the beginning of some quiet accomplishments of this fine naval ship.

For the next decade, the Jupiter served primarily support functions mostly doing cargo duty and that was the service it provided during World War I. The Jupiter did see many ports performing support functions throughout Europe before returning to Norfolk Virgina to start a new life. On December 12, 1919, the life of "the Jupiter" came to an end when it was decommissioned. But for the vessel itself, this was only the beginning of its long and honorable career as a US naval warship.

It was in Norfolk that the former USS Jupiter underwent a transformation. Not only did it take on the name USS Langley in honor of Samuel Pierpont Langley, the ship underwent a dramatic transformation into the very first prototype of a U.S. naval aircraft carrier. The final configuration of the overhauled naval vessel was compete in 1922. Her very first commander in this new assignment was Kenneth Whiting and it was he who proudly put the Langley to work helping the navy develop the Navy's powerful aviation warfare capabilities that would make such a huge difference in winning the war against the axis powers that lay ahead.

As the first aircraft carrier ever in what would become the backbone of the American naval aircraft infrastructure, the Langley racked up plenty of firsts. October 17, 1922, was the first time a pilot took off from the deck of a ship. Just nine days later Lieutenant Commander Godfrey de Courcelles Chevalier was the first pilot to land on an aircraft carrier deck when he set down on the deck of the Langley.

The Langley continued to be a valuable part of the US naval arsenal even after it was converted to a seaplane trader in 1936. Then on February 27th, 1942, while supporting antisubmarine maneuvers during World War II, The Langley was struck by an onslaught of nine Japanese bombers, which tragically damaged the ship critically causing it to sink in the line of duty. But it is worthwhile to take some time as we have done here today to look back on an important part of our US naval history at a ship that through many evolutions served its country honorably and ushered in the era of the US Navy aircraft carrier. And that historic ship was the USS Langley.

MiG Flights: Get an Insight into Mig 29 Jet Fighters

If you want to do a mig flight, you can currently only choose between a mig 29 flight or a flight in the mig-31. A few years ago, many more aircraft were available for a rented ride: Russian mig flights were carried out in mig-21, mig-23 and even mig-25. Those days are gone. What has changed?

To understand the current situation, let's look how the mig flights in Russia have evolved since the break-up of the Soviet Union.
Back in the 1990s, a mig flight was affordable for almost every European or American. Trembling Russian economy and widespread corruption made russian mig flights an incredible, yet affordable adventure - especially if you knew the right ways of booking.

All of these mig flights took off from the LII institute, situated at the Ramenskoye Airfield in Zhukovsky, right outside of Moscow. A big fleet of MiGs, primarily used for flight tests, were available for private rides. At times, Russia's trembling economy along with the low-rated ruble were the reasons why mig jet flights with paying clients accounted for the majority of mig flights in Zhukovsky. In some months, such "commercial" flights even surpassed the regular jet flights of the institute in numbers.

As Russia re-gained strength and recovered from the turmoil of the 1990s, jet flights at LII in Zhukovsky were realigned. In January 2006, a governmental decision to stop mig jet flights with paying tourists was issued, supposedly making mig jet flights for tourists in Moscow a thing of the past. Normal military operations continued, of course - such mig flights were not interrupted, normal operations from air bases like Kubinka were kept in place.

This is not the end of the story, though. Big parts of the Russian military-industrial complex have been suffering from decreasing arms sales. The SOKOL Aircraft Factory in Nizhniy Novgorod, an industrial city in the Volga region not far from Moscow, was desperately searching for new ways to generate revenue. After intensive contact between high-ranked staff of the SOKOL Aircraft plant and the flight broker MiGFlug.com, people at the factory started to realize that russian mig flights were in high demand - and that the unavailability of such flights at LII led to a supply vacuum. As producer of MiG-29UB aircraft (UB is the two-seater version of the MiG-29), people at SOKOL plant started to realize that mig jet flights could be a way to generate revenue and got the necessary permissions to carry out mig 29 flights as well as mig 31 flights with paying clients. Finally, after the uncertainity of early 2006, Russian mig flights were possible again.

In Summer 2006, only months after mig jet flights in Zhukovsky came to a halt, the first-ever so-called "westerner" took off from Sormovo Airfield in Nizhniy Novgorod, where today's mig 29 flights are being carried out. Long and intensive negotiations between the Aircraft Factory and Zurich-based MiGFlug made it possible for a Swiss Citizen in his 30's to open a new era of mig flights. Since that day in July 2006, mig 29 flights are a common sight in the skies of Nizhniy Novgorod and russian mig flights remain possible, even for non-pilots.

Locating Levels in Tanks and Silos Using Infrared Thermal Imaging

Background

Instrumentation for locating levels in tanks and silos is often unreliable. The need for precise information about levels remains necessary, or even critical, in many instances. For example, in one situation a thermographer was employed to verify a liquid level in a large storage tank along the Gulf Coast prior to the arrival of a tanker ship. In continuous processes the operator must know how much capacity is available in each tank. Without that knowledge production may be impeded or, if an overflow occurs, a potentially dangerous situation created. Sometimes traditional level indicating instruments simply cannot determine levels. Foams and waxes, for instance, are difficult to detect and measure accurately.

A paper mill experienced a situation in which a tank was believed to be sized improperly, when in fact it was simply full of foam rather than liquid. De-foaming the tank proved more cost effective than unnecessarily replacing it with a larger one! A petrochemical plant hired a contractor to clean out a large tank. When the manway door was opened, sludge, which had settled to a depth high above the door, oozed forth creating a dangerous and environmentally damaging situation. For industries needing to comply with the safety and process requirements of OSHA 1910, thermography may prove to be a particularly cost-effective tool to use. Each of these situations represents a real instance where infrared could have been used to provide or verify information about the condition inside the tank or silo. Level location as well as verification of other level indicating instruments continues to be an important need in industry.

Thermal Imaging as a Method for Determining Levels

Most of the time, the materials in a tank or silo, whether solids, liquids, or gases, behave differently when subjected to a thermal transition. The materials often have differing thermal capacitance characteristics. Gases typically change temperature much more easily than liquids. Water, for instance, has a thermal capacity that is 3500 times greater than air. One Btu of energy added to a cubic foot of water will raise its temperature 0.016°F while the same energy added to the same volume of air results in a 55°F increase!

While the thermal capacity of solids may be similar to liquids, the different way in which heat is transferred permits them to be distinguished with an infrared camera. Solids, such as sludge, are influenced primarily by conductive heat transfer. Fluids (non-solids), on the other hand, are strongly influenced by convective heat transfer. The result is that the layer of solids in close contact with the tank wall, despite its often high thermal capacitance, heat and cool more rapidly than the liquid portion because they do not mix in the same way the liquid does. One issue is whether the tank/silo is half-full or half-empty. This determination requires further research by the investigator of the materials, container housing and environmental circumstances.

Necessary Environmental Conditions

Key to determining levels is to observe the tank or silo during a thermal transition. If viewed with an infrared camera while at a thermal steady state with the surroundings, no differences will be seen. In fact, tanks and silos that are full or empty often appear identical with no indication of a level. Interestingly, it is difficult to find tanks or silos that are not in transition, although it may not always yield a detectable image. Outdoors, the day/night cycle often provides sufficient driving force to create detectable differences. Even indoors, variations in air temperature are often sufficient to make thermal transitions apparent. Environmental conditions can have a direct influence on the ability to detect levels by thermal imaging. Wind, precipitation, ambient air temperature, and solar loading can all, separately or together, create or negate differences on the surface. Other factors to be considered include the temperatures of the products being stored in or moved through the tanks and silos, as well as the rates at which they are moving. Many tanks are insulated, although rarely to the extent that they will always and entirely obliterate the thermal patterns caused by levels. When insulation is covered with unpainted metal cladding, care must be taken to increase emissivity, as discussed later.

Thermal Patterns of Materials in Different Forms

The most obvious pattern is a result of a liquid/gas interface. In a situation where the product is not heated, the gas typically responds quickly to the transient situation, while the liquid responds more slowly. During the day, the gas may be warmer than the liquid;at night it is cooler. Liquid/sludge relationships may be more difficult to discern. A larger transient may be required to create a detectable image. Thin layers of sludge may also be indistinguishable from the tank bottom. Sludge buildup in the center of the tank (i.e. not in contact with the wall) is simply not detectable, although product buildup on the sidewalls is often quite obvious. Foams are often not difficult to distinguish from liquids but may appear similar to gases. Care should be taken when pushing the tank through a rapid thermal transition to reveal the thermal differences. Locating levels associated with floating materials, such as waxes, will typically require more persistence, skill and a greater rate of transitional heat transfer, but the results can be startling.

Whether or not liquid/liquid interfaces, such as a mix of oil and water, can be seen depends entirely on their differing thermal capacities and, to a lesser extent, their viscosity. Simple experiments suggest it is fairly easy to locate the interface of oil and water, but further work needs to be done in the field to validate this technique. Some solids, such as coal ash, plastic pellets, powdered lime and wood chips, behave as fluids and are designated as "fluidized solids." While heat transfer in such materials is still primarily conductive, mass transfer of heat by the material's movement can be significant. For instance, hot ash or lime blown into a silo carries its process heat to the silo. Fluidized solids tend to behave similarly to liquids in the way they respond to gravity, except for the fact that they can "bridge" across areas where liquids typically would not. In fact, locating bridging of fluidized materials is a valuable use for thermography.

Issues to be Considered

Some tanks are covered in cladding, often unpainted aluminum or stainless steel. Detecting the kind of fine temperature differences necessary to reveal levels on surfaces such as these-ones having low emissivity and high reflectivity-is nearly impossible. The radiant difference is simply not detectable. The problem, however, is most often easily rectified by applying a high emissivity target vertically. A painted stripe or a piece of tape on the tank, for instance, can work very well. For outdoors work, use light colors and/or the shady side of the equipment to avoid solar loading. Occasionally tanks are heated or cooled with a jacket. These often cause thermal imaging cameras to be ineffective for level determination . In some instances it may be possible to see the structural "stand offs" between the tank wall and the jacket.

Tanks that are insulated can also prove challenging. Thankfully, insulation levels are typically not great enough that they preclude seeing levels; rather the insulation changes the thermal dynamics to the point where a detectable level may not be obvious as often. Simple techniques, explained below, can help enhance thermal differences so that they can be detected. In some instances it may be possible to cut small "plugs" out of the insulation at various levels that would more clearly reveal the tank temperatures. Although solar loading can enhance a pattern, more often it can cause subtle thermal patterns in a tank or silo to be obliterated. It may be possible to view the container on the shady side, but sometimes it may be necessary to return when the sun's affect is lessened. Spheroid tanks offer another type of challenge in that, when viewed from one point, their reflectance varies widely over their curved surface. It is not unusual to find the tops of such tanks appearing cooler while the bottom appearing warmer; all too often both patterns are related more to reflectance than emission. Tanks located inside of buildings are not subjected to diurnal heating cycles. Some thermal cycling usually does take place, but it may not be enough to make the radiant differences detectable. Again, simple techniques, explained below, can be used very effectively to enhance surface temperature differences.

Simple Techniques to Enhance Thermal Patterns

Often thermal patterns can be enhanced by using simple techniques to increase transient heat transfer. It may be possible to add heating or cooling directly into or to the surface of the tank/silo. The gas head in the tank responds more quickly than the liquid. As discussed above, solids may respond in a more complex manner. An industrial hot air gun can be used to heat the surface of small to medium sized tanks. Heating even a narrow area may dramatically reveal a level. Cooling can be provided simply by wetting the surface with water. As evaporation takes place, cooling drives transient heat flow and reveals or enhances the levels. While these techniques may not seem feasible for large tanks, such is not the case. Cooling in particular can easily be supplied with a stream of cold water hosed onto the tank surface. Add the element of time for the cooling to take effect and, in many cases, the image becomes readily apparent.

Conclusion

Many industries have a critical need to determine levels in tanks and silos and to validate the already existing level-indication instrumentation. Infrared thermal imaging provides a simple, cost-effective means of doing both. Conditions often allow for levels to be seen at almost any time of the night or day and throughout the year. While levels are not always immediately obvious, persistence, careful infrared imaging and simple enhancement techniques can often produce remarkable results.

Is Jimi Hendrix The Worlds Greatest Guitar Player and Composer?

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at extracting all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion.

His frequent hurricane blasts of noise and dazzling showmanship he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth and set his guitar on fire has sometimes obscured his considerable gifts as a songwriter, singer, and master of a gamut of blues, R&B, and rock styles.

When Hendrix became an international superstar in 1967, it seemed as if he had dropped out of a Martian spaceship, but in fact he served his apprenticeship the long, mundane way in numerous R&B acts on the chitlin circuit.

During the early and mid-60s, he worked with such R&B/soul greats as Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, and King Curtis as a backup guitarist. Occasionally he recorded as a session man(the Isley Brothers 1964 single Testify is the only one of these early tracks that offers even a glimpse of his future genius).
But the stars didn't appreciate his show-stealing showmanship, and Hendrix was straight-jacketed by sideman roles that didn't allow him to develop as a soloist. The logical step was for Hendrix to go out on his own, which he did in New York in the mid-60s, playing with various musicians in local clubs, and joining white blues-rock singer John Hammond Jr.s band for a while.

It was in a New York club that Hendrix was spotted by Animals bassist Chas Chandler. The first lineup of the Animals was about to split, and Chandler, looking to move into management, convinced Hendrix to move to London and record as a solo act in England. There a group was built around Jimi, also featuring Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass, that was dubbed the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The trio became stars with astonishing speed in the U.K., where Hey Joe, Purple Haze, and The Wind Cries Mary all made the Top Ten in the first half of 1967.

These tracks were also featured on their debut album, Are You Experienced? A psychedelic meisterwerk that became a huge hit in the U.S. after Hendrix created a sensation at the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967.
Are You Experienced was an astonishing debut, particularly from a young R&B veteran who had rarely sung, and apparently never written his own material, before the Experience formed.

What caught most peoples attention at first was his virtuosic guitar playing, which employed an arsenal of devices, including wah-wah pedals, buzzing feedback solos, crunching distorted riffs, and lightning, liquid runs up and down the scales. But Hendrix was also a first-rate songwriter, melding cosmic imagery with some surprisingly pop-savvy hooks and tender sentiments.
He was also an excellent blues interpreter and passionate, engaging singer (although his gruff, throaty vocal pipes were not nearly as great assets as his instrumental skills).

Are You Experienced was psychedelia at its most eclectic, synthesizing mod pop, soul, R&B, Dylan, and the electric guitar innovations of British pioneers like Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, and Eric Clapton.
Amazingly, Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime. Axis Bold As Love and the double-LP Electric Ladyland were more diffuse and experimental than Are You Experienced?

On Electric Ladyland in particular, Hendrix pioneered the use of the studio itself as a recording instrument, manipulating electronics and devising overdub techniques (with the help of engineer Eddie Kramer in particular) to plot uncharted sonic territory. Not that these albums were perfect, as impressive as they were, the instrumental breaks could meander, and Hendrix's songwriting was occasionally half-baked, never matching the consistency of Are You Experienced? (although he exercised greater creative control over the later albums).

The final two years of Hendrix's life were turbulent ones musically, financially, and personally. He was embroiled in enough complicated management and record company disputes (some dating from ill-advised contracts he had signed before the Experience formed) to keep the lawyers busy for years. He disbanded the Experience in 1969, forming the Band of Gypsies with drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox to pursue funkier directions.

He closed Woodstock with a sprawling, shaky set, redeemed by his famous machine-gun interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner. The rhythm section of Mitchell and Redding were underrated keys to Jimis best work, and the Band of Gypsies ultimately couldn't measure up to the same standard, although Hendrix did record an erratic live album with them. In early 1970, the Experience re-formed again and disbanded again shortly afterward.

At the same time, Hendrix felt torn in many directions by various fellow musicians, record-company expectations, and management pressures, all of whom had their own ideas of what Hendrix should be doing. Coming up on two years after Electric Ladyland, a new studio album had yet to appear, although Hendrix was recording constantly during the period.

While outside parties did contribute to bogging down Hendrix's studio work, it also seems likely that Jimi himself was partly responsible for the stalemate, unable to form a permanent lineup of musicians, unable to decide what musical direction to pursue, unable to bring himself to complete another album despite jamming endlessly.

A few months into 1970, Mitchell, Hendrix's most valuable musical collaborator came back into the fold, replacing Miles in the drum chair, although Cox stayed in place. It was this trio that toured the world during Hendrix's final months.

It's extremely difficult to separate the facts of Hendrix's life from rumors and speculation. Everyone who knew him well, or claimed to know him well, has different versions of his state of mind in 1970. Critics have variously mused that he was going to go into jazz, that he was going to get deeper into the blues, that he was going to continue doing what he was doing, or that he was too confused to know what he was doing at all.

The same confusion holds true for his death, contradictory versions of his final days have been given by his closest acquaintances of the time.
He had been working intermittently on a new album, tentatively titled First Ray of the New Rising Sun, when he died in London on September 18, 1970, from drug-related complications.

Hendrix recorded a massive amount of unreleased studio material during his lifetime. Much of this (as well as entire live concerts) was issued posthumously; several of the live concerts were excellent, but the studio tapes have been the focus of enormous controversy for over 20 years. These initially came out in haphazard drabs and drubs (the first, The Cry of Love, was easily the most outstanding of the lot). In the mid-70s, producer Alan Douglas took control of these projects, posthumously overdubbing many of Hendrix's tapes with additional parts by studio musicians.

In the eyes of many Hendrix fans, this was sacrilege, destroying the integrity of the work of a musician known to exercise meticulous care over the final production of his studio recordings. Even as late as 1995, Douglas was having ex-Knack drummer Bruce Gary record new parts for the typically misbegotten compilation Voodoo Soup. After a lengthy legal dispute, the rights to Hendrix's estate, including all of his recordings, returned to Al Hendrix, the guitarists father, in July of 1995.

With the help of Jimi's step-sister Janie, Al set up Experience Hendrix to begin to get Jimi's legacy in order. They began by hiring John McDermott and Jimi's original engineer, Eddie Kramer to oversee the remastering process. They were able to find all the original master tapes, which had never been used for previous CD releases, and in April of 1997, Hendrix's first three albums were reissued with drastically improved sound.

Accompanying those reissues was a posthumous compilation album (based on Jimi's handwritten track listings) called First Rays of the New Rising Sun, made up of tracks from the Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge and War Heroes.

Later in 1997, another compilation called South Saturn Delta showed up, collecting more tracks from posthumous LPs like Crash Landing, War Heroes, and Rainbow Bridge (without the terrible 70s overdubs), along with a handful of never-before-heard material that Chas Chandler had withheld from Alan Douglas for all those years.

More archival material followed; Radio One was basically expanded to the two-disc BBC Sessions (released in 1998), and 1999 saw the release of the full show from Woodstock as well as additional concert recordings from the Band of Gypsies shows entitled Live at the Fillmore East. 2000 saw the release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience four-disc box set, which compiled remaining tracks from In the West, Crash Landing and Rainbow Bridge along with more rarities and alternates from the Chandler cache.

The family also launched Dagger Records, essentially an authorized bootleg label to supply hardcore Hendrix fans with material that would be of limited commercial appeal. Dagger Records has released several live concerts (of shows in Oakland, Ottawa and Clark University in Massachusetts) and a collection of studio jams and demos called Morning Symphony Ideas.

All recreational activities are available at Lake Habeeb and pets are also allowed on some campsites. The Choptank River Fishing Pier is open 23hrs a day, 365 days a year. With its vast variety and fish-filled waters, its paradise for anglers.

At Deep Creek State Park fishing is good and so is hunting, but for that you have to follow certain rules, obtain a license and wait for the season. Green Ridge State Forest is spread over 43000 acres and shares its borders with many mountain ranges. Wildlife here is aplenty with many ponds and streams.

Patuxent River State Park has virgin stream Valley Park, which is spread over 6648 acres and many natural trails. Some parts of the park, known as State Wildlands Area, is mainly a fishing and hunting ground. Seneca Creek State Park's area along River Road has restricted hunting ground and a 90 acre Clopper lake provides fishing.

British Infantry

The Proudest History-parachute Regiment

In a way Winston Churchill is responsible for the existence of the fantastic fighting unit we know as the parachute regiment. At the beginning of the Second World War the then British Prime Minister called for the formation of an elite British fighting unit. The parachute regiment was created to answer this call.

His specific instructions were to form a corps of at least 5,000 parachute troops. This led to the setting up of a parachute training school near Manchester. This amazing corp with its elite selection process and grueling training regime grew at a fast rate. It first became 11th Special Air Service Battalion and ultimately on August 1st 1942, the Parachute regiment. It was a military regiment to be proud of, a welcome addition to the British special forces.

It quickly became a vital part of the military. Its first successful raid was in 1942. C company dropped on a Nazi radar station in Bruneval, France. The mission was a triumph with the entire group living up to the Para motto, ready for anything. Their contribution was vital and after this effort their reputation as an elite force continued to grow. They quickly gained a reputation for being the best of the best, just as Churchill had wanted.

The regiment developed their image with the iconic red beret the envy of the military regiment and a much sort after item. The other item that is special to the parachute regiment is the coveted wings, gaining those is something to be very proud of. It marks you out as a real force to be reckoned with. The parachute gained their nickname, the red devils, after the enemy started to refer to them by that name. This reflected their fierce fighting qualities and the esteem they were held in by those who fought against them.

The parachute regiment went on to serve its country proudly in many areas of war. Never once failing to impress with their fighting skill and bravery. They have fought everywhere from Palestine to Northern Ireland to the Falklands and the awards for courage they have collected along the way are too numerous to mention. Recently the parachute regiment has seen action Kosovo and performed rescue missions in Sierra Leone. The modern day para's are the British army's airborne infantry able to deploy quickly to anywhere in the world. Their role has changed slightly over the years but their reputation never has. These men are something that Churchill could be proud of.

It takes training and guts to succeed in the parachute regiment. Soft is not an option and that will be made very clear to you the day you turn up for your test. Parachute regiment training is not for the faint of heart because this is not a job for those who are not mentally and physically tough. If you want to join this elite group of men you are going to need a good parachute regiment guide penned by those that have been there and done it.

Military Watches

In Navigator watch design, the seconds bezel allowed the pilot to synchronize the seconds hand with correct reference time before takeoff, and to make manual corrections to radio time signals while in flight, thus eliminating any "chronometer error" and the navigational errors that could result.

Great War, Great Technological Advances

Seconds continued to be of the essence in both military technology and military watches. "Center-seconds" hands, (also called a "hack seconds feature") - the feature that allowed for synchronization between two timepieces - continued to improve and advance.

Sizing is all over the board; historically, such notable companies as Elgin, Waltham, and Bulova Watches crafted watches (for the renamed Army Air Force in 1941), as small as 31mm in diameter. These watches were worn on the outside of a flight jacket or on the navigator's thigh. The Germans also added antimagnetic protection to their chronometers.

Within another major Axis power, Seiko produced a staggering number of military watches for the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. These watches averaged around 49mm in diameter.

Navigating The Cold War

As the days of WWII faded into memory and the strained peace of the "Cold War" became reality, military budgets and military technology boomed. In the era of nuclear bombs the airplane ascended to its most powerful military and political role in history. Watchmakers rose to the call by designing an instrument worthy of going into battle with humankind's most powerful weapon. Those were the Glory Days of the military watch, although no one design house can claim full credit for the strides made in the industry during that time.

Cold War-era military watches were much larger in size than the average American navigators before them. Averaging 36mm in diameter, the crafting of these timepieces was moved to Switzerland and Swiss military watch companies with centuries' old reputations for precision. Like those before them, these Navigators also featured a matte black dial marked with white Arabic numerals 1-12, and with white indices. The new designs did not have white numerals at cardinal 3, 6, 9, and 12. Another new addition was a shatterproof Perspex acrylic crystal, which protected its large 12 ligne movement from magnetic fields. These hand-wound watches were expected to be water-resistant to 20 feet, including water-resistance under low-pressure at operational altitudes.

Own A Piece of History - At A Reasonable Price

While several of the top-tier watchmakers are reviving this classic style, vintage quality does not have to break the bank. Seiko watches established a reputation for the brand, recognized by watch collectors. You can buy watches from Seiko for reasonable prices, classic Navigator-style watches can be enjoyed by all. Scale Armor

About the Method to Make Armor in Cosplaying

Basically, it’s totally two different concepts between armor series and fabric series. In the worse condition, the fabric costume can be made by professional tailor, while most armor costume has to be home-made. Of course, the stage influence can be highly different.

In the first place, 70-100 us dollors is the basic budget (including materials, manufacturing fee, color, weapon and other ornaments) to make an armor costume. Generally speaking, the basic materials are the same. It is normal to use Fiber Reinforced Plastics Grille (FRP grille) or Polyvinylchlorid (PVC). FRP is sold in bucket and is cheap as a factorial material. These are the advantages and disadvantages of these two:

1.PVC:

Advantages: cheap, easily shaped and manufactured (compared to FRP)

Disadvantages: PVC-made costume is stiff and seriously affects the smoothness in moving, and it cannot be made exquisitely and subtly. And the difficult in coloring is also a vital defect.

2.FRP Grille:

Advantages: the figure can be really delicate according to the hand-made skills. The costume is firm and agile; barely affect the moving on stage.

Disadvantages: it is difficult to make with FRP, and the weight is acceptably heavy.

Take Moster Hunter as an example, the scapular guard and helmet and other parts which need shaping should generally made of FRP, and other parts should be made of PVC. The approximate proportion of FRP, PVC and cloth is 3:3:4.

About weapon: definitely cannot be made of wood. The reason is simple: we are cosplayer but not laborer. It’s unpredictable that some weak kids cannot hold the wood-made weapon for long enough and fail, and hit someone.

These are the plans I come up with:

1. use KT board:

Advantage: easy to manufacture and cheap

Disadvantages: not endurable and easily broken

2. use steel wire to form the frame and material to cover the outside:

Advantage: easy to shape and cheap

Disadvantages: not endurable and easily broken

3. FRP hollow molding:

Advantage: the shape is perfect, and so-made armor is light and firm

Disadvantages: compared to first two is expensive and difficult to make. Not recommended for new comer.

PS: about FRP, because of the difficulty in manufacturing, there are no FRP costume in HangZhou cosplay circle, however, there are lots of successful cases. The champion of this year’s HangZhoun cosplay festival—-TB, whose costume is made of FRP, have showed their magnificent and gallant cosplay performance. In present time, this material is under research due to lack of professional molders. (briefly, the process is first to mold by soil in 1:1 scale, and then shape the needed costume) as a result, the material is inexpensive, while the biggest problem is handwork skills.

Last one, about coloring, which impress the audience in the first sight. No matter how delicate the shape is, if the color is awful, the costume is a failure and seriously affects the credibility of audience. Nevertheless, it seems our club or nearly the whole cosplay circle doesn’t take the hue problem for granted, but it is so important and easily missed.

An Interview with Mihaly Tapolyai

Listening to Mihály Tapolyai is like hearing a panoramic of Eastern European history. He is a psychiatrist adventurer who likes to be where the action is. As a young man he resisted the Nazis and the Communists, smuggled Bibles when they were contraband, spent time in prison, took part in several freedom movements, and was present when Russian tanks rumbled into Prague to quell the Czech Rebellion. After the following interview, when war was tearing through Kosovo, he sent me an email expressing his sadness at not being able to get through to Yugoslavia where he has spoken at several conferences and knew people who were in need. One of his books, Hymn from Prison, is a fascinating tale of his faith, dependence on God, and impact on the lives of others during his incarceration for trying to cross a border during the days of Communism.

He has been active in developing the Hungarian Christian Alcoholics Anonymous Fellowship, has worked in prisons, counseled and preached  to traumatized victims of war in several eastern European countries, and become a pioneer radio broadcaster, hosting the first call in program in Transylvania, Romania. He has practiced as a Christian child psychiatrist and taught psychology and counseling at the State University of Babes Bolyai as well as the Protestant Seminary in Cluj, Transylvania. Mih ¡ly Tapolyai lives alone in a third floor apartment in Budapest. Standing in his apartment late one night, we looked at the snow covered park below, aglow in the faint light of a street lamp. I stand here often and watch the children, he said. It is a scene that brings peace to a lonely old man. He may be elderly and lonely, but he continues to make a difference as an unsung hero in his part of the world.

*Tell us about your background.*

*MT:* I was born in Hungary, in the region of Tokaj, which is famous form wine. I went to university during the WWII and finished at the University of Budapest Medical School just after the war. It was very hard, but we made jokes about the problems, even about the bombing.

*Was Hungary at war on the German side?*

*MT:* Yes. After the WWI, Hungary was divided into six parts. Some areas went to Slovakia, some to Yugoslavia, others to Austria and Poland. The only part that remained was in the center. It was just for cows and farming. We were surrounded by a federation of anti-Hungarian countries such as Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia, who wanted to divide the country further. But before the WWII, Hitler came down to the Hungarian-inhabited regions to bring us political justice so we were on the German side during the war.

*How did you get into psychiatry?*

*MT:* After I got my diploma in 1947, I became a village doctor, a general practitioner because I enjoyed helping people in the small villages. Then, after three years of country practice, I went to the next town, got my specialization in psychiatry after four years, and three years later I got a neurological specialization. After several more years I got the child psychiatry specialization also. I still like to study, to learn.

*Were you a Christian during all this time?*

*MT:* In 1943, when I was 22 years old, a friend in the dormitory where I lived in Budapest gave a testimony about his conversion and guided me to listen to a very important medical professor who was a believer. I became a believer as well.

*What did you do once you had completed all your training?*

*MT:* I came to Budapest and tried to work here, but slowly I also became involved in rescuing prisoners. My first rescue mission began during the war. The Christian students used to visit the Jews, examine them, and bring them medication. We had to keep passports and switch passports to save people who were guarded by SS soldiers. This was my first inspiration to do this work. And after the war, when the communists took over and the Russians were here, I decided to do something similar with Christians. It started first with my own pastor, who had been sentenced almost to death because he supposedly had formed a conspiracy, but it was not true. I had a team of young people, and we started smuggling Bibles, bread, food, and small written tracks to the many Christians who were put in concentration camps.

*You smuggled things into those concentration camps? How did you get out?*

*MT:* The same way that I got in! Under the wires. That was my mission. I think we helped a lot of people.

*Were you also practicing psychiatry at the time?*

*MT:* Yes, on the weekends, I went to the countryside and visited my clients in the name of the church. Sometimes I took letters hidden in my shoes.

*Did the authorities know that you were doing this?*

*MT:* No. Once I was caught, but I resisted with words. That was in the 1950s. In the 60s, I smuggled Bibles into Romania. One time I was caught at the Romanian border with the Bibles. I was arrested, I escaped, I was again arrested, and I was imprisoned in Poland. I wrote about this in a book called Hymn from Prison.

*Remember how Paul and Silas sang hymns? How long were you in prison?*

*MT:* Three months, but Amnesty International intervened through the help of Dr. Paul Tournier! He wrote this letter: Thank you for your kind letter, and I am in great sympathy with you. I remember with honor your father. I sent your letter forward to Amnesty International, which will be the most able to help. With best wishes to you, very sincerely, Paul Tournier. One of my own children wrote to him.

*So you were practicing psychiatry, doing evangelism, and smuggling Bibles all at the same time. When you were practicing psychiatry, was it uniquely Christian in any way? Did you bring your faith into your counseling?*

*MT:* Of course! For example, we had special healing conferences for a week in the summer regularly. I've been doing this for 50 years since 47 or 48. Every morning we have a Bible study, that is problem oriented. Then, later in the morning, I give a lecture. The next conference, for example, has the theme Healing for Nervous People. We will talk about why people are nervous, how to handle loss and frustration, ways to cope, and issues of maturity and identity. After the lectures we do role playing, and in the evening before going to bed, we have a devotional meditation, a short preaching, and praying together.

*When you studied psychiatry, the theories you studied were opposed to religion. You were a Christian. How did you bring your faith and your psychiatry together?*

*MT:* In those early days, the pastors and churches ignored the human soul. They knew much about hermeneutics but did not understand people, emotions, or the causes of human actions. One pastor said to me We learned in the theological seminary that Freud, Jung, and Adler the classical psychologists were not just atheists but occultists. I replied that these people searched for the truth in the occult, ignoring the church. But they were able to explain things that the church could not. For instance, Freud spoke about emotions in ourselves that we cannot control but that possess us.

*Was it difficult to practice Christian psychiatry in Eastern Europe?*

*MT:* Yes, after my arrest I stayed in Hungary for two years, but there were some provocations, and I did not want to die, so I escaped to the West with the help of a Venezuelan Indian doctor. He had come here to learn how to make his country communistic, but he became a Christian through my testimony. He helped me escape. If I had been caught, I would have been in prison for life, because I had already been in prison. Instead I went to Paris and then to America, where I lived for eight years and worked in a mental institution in Cleveland. Later I was invited to be a counselor in a church, but they did not report me to the Social Security people and never paid me anything so I did not have money. Even now I have no pension.

*What you think about Christian psychiatry and Christian counseling today?*

*MT:* Here in Hungary, counseling is very structured, very theoretical. I prefer the practical American counseling system. It is pure, clear, and really helpful. I am trying to make some changes here. Tomorrow evening, for example, some young pastors will come who are very interested in counseling. They are good Christians, but they have lost contact with the world. They cannot relate to the very atheistic and almost demonic world around them. Christians here are overly pious, and therefore isolated from the realistic life. In Hungary, we need teachers who teach sound spirituality.

*I know you have a radio ministry, you still do the conferences, and you meet with pastors, but what else can be done to make Christian counseling better in Hungary?*

*MT:* Hold conferences. But there is a big resistance on the part of the churches. Many of the positions in the churches were filled by the communist party, so they don't trust others and they are not trustworthy. *What about young pastors of good churches? They teach from the Bible and talk to their parishioners on Sunday. Cant they help individuals or couples who have problems?*

*MT:* They could, but they do so without training or qualifications.

They do what they do instinctively.

*Let me ask you about Hungarian psychiatrists and psychologists. How do they respond to somebody like you being a Christian?*

*MT:* They accept that I am a Christian, but they ignore me. Sometimes I get resistance, most often from Christians. They say, You have this call-in radio program that does counseling. I was born here, I lived always here, but nobody has ever asked me to say a word on the radio. You came here from America and now you are always speaking through the radio. What you do is terrible. You haven't mentioned your wife.

*MT:* My wife was a nice person, and I loved her. After three years in

Romania, she asked me How long should we live here? That was a big misery at that time. She said to me, You work here among these people who want to stone you . And I said, Well, this is my task, I have to stay. She left me and ran back to America, where she found a counseling position with the Mennonite church. She does not want to come back. But if I go there as a 77-year-old person, what can I do in the United States? I cannot start a new life. I have no Social Security. I have more security here, and I can continue my work in Yugoslavia, Romania, Slovenia, and in other places where people need my help.

*What would you say to Christian counselors in the United States?*

*MT:*

I read American books, but most authors want to please the evangelical mentality. As it happened here with the communists, everybody uses the same phrases, the same words, the same expressions, and thinks in the same ways. We central and Eastern European Christians have experienced such horrors, wars, deportations, and concentration camps that the ideal lemonade pictures we get in books can never grasp us. Find a therapist for immediate help.

These books deal too much with self-justification and turn everyday readers against God. Life is harsh here. We need realistic answers from the Scriptures. I am a Hungarian by birth, but I became also an American, so I know both sides, and I love both. My heart is Hungarian; my mind is mostly American. I like the American lifestyle. But I cannot go back now. How could I exist there alone? So I am here, ready to share in writing, in speaking, in helping. Online therapy can be helpful to get rid of such problems.

Ijn Battleship
The IJN Nagato: A Battleship or Heavy cruiser?

I heard many people called it a battleship and others called it a heavy cruiser. what exactly is it?

Laid down on August 28, 1917, launched on November 9, 1919 and commissioned on November 25, 1920, the ship carried a main armament of eight of the new 16 inch main guns mounted two per turret; two superfiring centerline forward and two superfiring centerline aft. Nagato was the name ship of a two-ship battleship class that also included the Mutsu and the ships had a mixture of 15 oil-fired and six mixed-firing boilers that gave them the exceptional speed of 26.7 knots. When built, these ships were the best in the world—they had bigger guns, were better protected and faster than the excellent British Queen Elizabeth class and they were in the water before the similarly-armed and much slower American Colorado class. “Nagato” is the name of an area in Japan.

At the time of their construction, these were the most powerful battleships in the world. In 1934, both ships started major reconstruction that added bulges for added underwater protection (increasing beam from 95 to 113 feet), added a triple bottom, installed new oil-fired boilers and new engines that enabled them to steam at 25 knots, even with the broader beam, added the distinctive Japanese “pagoda” foremast, replaced the guns with newer models with a higher angle of fire and longer range and increased antiaircraft protection. In August 1939, Nagato became flagship of the Combined Fl

Russian Martial Art And Kettlebell Training

Russian martial art training and kettlebell training involves elements of strength, flexibility and relaxation. Many would argue that speed and technique should also be included, but given that you have trained in all three of these disciplines, then speed will come naturally. Technique is immaterial: it is related to what you do, not how you do it.

Training, on the other hand, is how you do what you do. The what is irrelevant. It is the how that matters. A boxer cares not what a karate student does, but only what he himself does. A man or woman facing opponents is not concerned with what others can do, but only with they do themselves. It is not the 'what' but the 'how' that matters, and the 'how' is related to training, practice and knowledge.

The training of Russian martial artists is designed to improved the 'how'. Russian martial art has no need of pre-orchestrated movements or katas as Japanese and Chinese martial arts have. Much has been written about Russian martial arts and their means of attack and self defence, a lot of which is based on the popular view of the Russian Special Forces. Most Special Forces can employ the techniques used by their Russian counterparts, but it is the Russian methods of training that make the difference.

Pavel Tsatsouline, trainer to the Russian military and then the American Special Forces and other military personnel, teaches you the secrets of the super-strong and of attaining supreme martial arts power. He does this through use of Russian kettlebells and the tension and relaxation techniques used by the Cossacks who could slice a man from shoulder to buttocks with only a light one handed sabre.

The Cossacks trained by standing in a lake or river up to their waist and then slicing into the water with their sabres for hours on end. The secret was to be in total relaxation until the moment of strike when all the power of the body was concentrated in the one blow, and then reverting to total bodily relaxation immediately after. In that way, strength and stamina were maintained while the blow itself was imparted with the maximum possible strength of the whole body.

Flexibility is the true secret behind supreme martial art power, and the one bodily attribute that is most ignored and misunderstood by the majority of martial art exponents. Russian martial art techniques make best use of supreme strength and absolute power through the understanding of how to properly relax between blows. The supreme power of a martial art punch is used through a total understanding of the levers of the body, the muscles that move them and the relaxation that allows these muscles to exert maximum power to the levers.

A powerful punch is a rapid snap with maximum power and then total relaxation until the next punch. Russians are trained in dynamic relaxation exercises in all athletic training, and the fast and loose techniques they use are ideal for the rigors of absolute mastery in martial arts.

Russian martial art training and kettlebell training is not the theatrically disciplined art of the Chinese and Japanese, but a technique designed for maximum power and effect in attack and not just self defence. The use of the power of the human body can be maximized only by developing the supreme strength possible through kettlebell exercise, and the flexibility and relaxation techniques as taught by the master of the Russian martial art, Pavel Tsatsouline, master teacher of Russian and American Special Forces personnel.

How Military Uses Alternative Source of Energy

The US military knows that its branches must revamp their thinking about how to engage in "the theater of war" in the new, post-Cold War world of the 21st century. One thing that the military leaders stress is the desire for the forces deployed in the theater to be able to be more energy-independent. Currently the US military has policies and procedures in place to interact with allies or sympathetic local populaces to help its forces in the field get their needed energy and clean water when engaged in a foreign military campaign. However, this is not wholly reliable, as the US might well find itself facing unilateral military activities, or have itself in a situation where its allies cannot help it with the resources it needs to conduct its military actions successfully.

The US military is very interested in certain alternative energies that, with the right research and development technologically, can make it energy independent, or at least a great deal more so, on the battlefield. One of the things that greatly interests the military along these lines is the development of small nuclear reactors, which could be portable, for producing theater-local electricity. The military is impressed with how clean-burning nuclear reactors are and how energy efficient they are. Making them portable for the typical warfare of today's highly mobile, small-scaled military operations is something they are researching. The most prominent thing that the US military thinks these small nuclear reactors would be useful for involves the removal of hydrogen (for fuel cell) from seawater. It also thinks that converting seawater to hydrogen fuel in this way would have less negative impact on the environment than its current practices of remaining supplied out in the field.

Seawater is, in fact, the military's highest interest when it comes to the matter of alternative energy supply. Seawater can be endlessly "mined" for hydrogen, which in turn powers advanced fuel cells. Using OTEC, seawater can also be endlessly converted into desalinated, potable water.  Potable water and hydrogen for power are two of the things that a near-future deployed military force will need most of all.

In the cores of nuclear reactors—which as stated above are devices highly interesting, in portable form, to the US military—we encounter temperatures greater than 1000 degrees Celsius. When this level of temperature is mixed with a thermo-chemical water-splitting procedure, we have on our hands the most efficient means of breaking down water into its component parts, which are molecular hydrogen and oxygen. The minerals and salts that are contained in seawater would have to be extracted via a desalination process in order to make the way clear for the water-splitting process. These could then be utilized, such as in vitamins or in salt shakers, or simply sent back to the ocean (recycling). Using the power of nuclear reactors to extract this hydrogen from the sea, in order to then input that into fuel cells to power advanced airplanes, tanks, ground vehicles, and the like, is clearly high on the R & D priority list of the military.

The Various Models of Jeep CJ

Human beings have always had a fascination for the vehicles that they drive. Man was very close to his first vehicle the horse. Then chariots came along with other forms. Then with time the motor vehicles were introduced. When they were introduced they had a very limited power and were used only for basic transportation services. But with time they evolved into a machine that can be used for adventurous purpose. This article deals about the various models of Jeep CJ.

The company has introduced a lot of models and they have been very successful too. They produce trucks, heavy vehicles, and off roaders. The various off roaders of jeep were jeep cj, jeep sj, jeep dj, jeep mj.

They used to give the vehicles which are used by these great people as a memento. The jeep company tried to find an alternative to this and decided to give some sort of a civilian vehicle which has a better look. This is the reason for the development of the new model Jeep CJ.

This model was designed based on a military model jeep which has a good reach among the public, mainly, with people who has much passion towards the nation.

One of the popular jeep model CJ was cj-2. It was designed based on the military jeep used in World War II. People were really having a wonderful time with this model. It was like a modified version of four by four and it was based on the famous Willy design. It had under its hoods the Willy's go devil engine.

It was an agricultural vehicle that looked very much akin to military vehicle. So they have decided to make some changes in the engine of the vehicle similar to the one that was used for military purpose. The company was successful in selling about two million units which is really a huge success.

This was the model that made jeep truly a world class vehicle. It became a name that was famous around the world. Jeep gave the license to Mitsubishi of Japan and Mahindra of India to produce vehicles that were based on the cj 3B model.

They made some slight modifications to the vehicle that was used for military purposes. The company sold more than 2 million units of this model and it was very big success for the company.

The other model that needs a mention in the jeep cj's story is the cj4. It was the vehicle that was created with the Willy's hurricane engine. It was expected to be a huge success. But it didn't even go to the actual mass production stage.

It was so successful that many special editions of this model were introduced. Some of the special models of jeep cj5 were tuxedo park mark III and IV, renegade I, II, super jeep, golden eagle.

The famous jeep model cj was the cj-2. It was the model based on the military jeep used in World War II. The people who bought it had a lot of fun with it. It also brought a sense of pride to the owners due to its similarity with the military jeep. It is a four by four vehicle just like the military version. It was based on the Willy's design. It had the Willy's go devil engine.
