The KTM X-Bow A Road Racer That Looks Like No Other

When the Austrian manufacturer KTM announced it would build a new lightweight X-Bow road car back in 2006, it stunned the assembled journalist with its looks and design. KTM had already built up a reputation in the production of endurance motorcycles, where it had already dominated several rally raid events, most notably the demanding Paris Dakar rally, however the company was now turning its attention to manufacturing high performance light weight road cars.

The X-Bow is KTM's attempt to diversify and expand its business in the face of falling numbers of bike licences in Europe, and certainly when the first cars were released in 2008 wearing KTM's famous orange and black racing colours it was easy to see that they had started their design from a blank sheet of paper.

Quite simply the KTM X-Bow looks like no other vehicle on the road today, with its all carbon fibre tub, exposed suspension components, angular shaped bodywork and twin rollover hoops this is one car that is sure to get you noticed. In fact, this is not a car for shy and retiring types, although because the X-Bow lacks a windscreen you could drive it wearing a helmet for added protection and privacy.

Power for the X-Bow comes in the shape of Audi's 2 litre Fsi engine, which produces a claimed 237bhp, although rumours suggest that these cars actually leave the factory with much closer to 300bhp. With a total kerb weight of just 800kg KTM's claimed time of 0-60 in under 4 seconds seems entirely plausible as does an extra 200kg of downforce generated by the body work at 124 mile per hour.

As you would expect from a motorcycle manufacturer, simplicity of design is paramount, there is no ignition key to fire up the engine just an electronic key fob that you keep in your pocket and a dash mounted starter button. Whilst in place of an ordinary instrument binnacle there is just one centrally mounted rubberised LCD control panel, which challengingly asks Are You Ready to Race each time it is switched on.

When it comes to the drivers and passengers seat the simple answer is there isn't one, instead there are blocks of moulded foam stuck in strategic points inside the cabin and adjustable pedals and a removable steering wheel.

In its class only the Ariel Atom or Caterham R500, have the handling and performance to keep up with the X-bow, and of those two contenders only the exposed scaffolding shaped chassis of the Ariel Atom has the looks to compete.

However by the time all of the must have extras have been added to the X-bow like the F1 steering wheel, adjustable suspension, xenon headlights and carbon fibre floor it can cost twice as much as the Ariel Atom, and to be frank that’s quite a price to pay for a road racer that will probably only be used during weekends in the summer.

The Bald Eagle, National Symbol of the United States of America

For many years I taught my fifth grade students about the symbols of the United States of America. Over the years I have grown to love our national symbol, the American Bald Eagle. Many students are shocked to learn that our national symbol is not the flag, but the Bald Eagle.

In 1782 it was chose as the National Bird and then as our national emblem in 1787. You can find it on the Great Seal of the United States with its wings spread wide and a shield for his breast. The shield has 13 red and white stripes. In its right talon it holds an olive branch and, if you care to count, you will find that the olive branch has 13 leaves and 13 berries. This olive branch represents the United States desire for peace. In the Bald Eagles left talon is a bundle of 13 arrows that represent our willingness to fight for our freedom, if necessary. Finally in its beak is a scroll with the motto “E Pluribus Unum” which means ‘one out of many’.

The Bald Eagle also appears on the Presidential Seal, most coins, paper money and many stamps.

There are many types of eagles all over the world, but the American Bald Eagle only lives on the North American Continent. That is one reason that the Golden Eagle was not chosen because it lives in Europe, also.

It has been reported that at one of the first battles of the Revolutionary War the noise of the battle awoke sleeping eagles who flew from their nests circling the men fighting below. Their shrill cries blended with the cries of the fighting men. Some of them said they are “shrieking for freedom”.

When born the Bald Eagle is born it is gray and not the graceful bird of flight that you see five years later after it has developed it’s white tail feathers and head feathers.

The Bald Eagle is at the top of the food chain living in the tops of lofty mountains and near coasts and lakes where fish abound. They represent boundless freedom as they soar through the blue skies.

When you first see this bird he is really impressive. It has a 2 ½ - 3 foot body and can spread its sings 6-8 feet. When it spreads those wings and takes flight you catch your breath because they are so beautiful. To see their nests (aerie) in trees you would look for a tree that is usually over seventy five feet tall. The nests themselves are about five feet in diameter and just as deep.

There are many interesting facts about the Bald Eagle, such as its diving speed which can reach 100mph as it goes for a fish. At one time they were being killed in record numbers for their beautiful feathers. The government intervened and put them on the endangered list.

The term ‘eagle eyes’ refers to their ability to see 1 ½ miles away. We need to keep an eagle eye on our freedoms that are represented by this noble bird, The American Bald Eagle, so that we don’t loose them.

Kelly Blue Book's Top Picks for Best Fuel-efficient Vehicles

Along with the heat of summer come high gas prices. Consumers will undoubtedly want to find ways to save a few dollars at the pump.

Drivers are often encouraged to improve their vehicle's fuel economy by reducing air conditioning use, and checking important parts (like Mazda auto parts) -- changing filters regularly, checking tire pressure, having fuel injectors cleaned and using a fuel additive to increase engine performance.

But are consumers actually using these fuel economy tips to help save money?

A recent Kelley Blue Book Marketing Research study on fuel economy has revealed that nearly six out of 10 consumers say they would be likely to change their filters at scheduled intervals and/or check their tire pressure regularly to achieve greater fuel economy or save money. Nearly seven out of 10 consumers (68 percent) also believe that by performing some or all of the recommended gas-saving maintenance to their car, they would save up to $200 annually.

"Gas prices have reached levels that are causing consumers to take steps they may not have when pump prices were more moderate to improve fuel economy and save a few dollars," said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com. "If these consumers actually perform all of these gas saving tips, it's likely they could save up to 15 or 20 percent of their entire fuel costs annually."

But the survey also revealed that only 23 percent say they would be willing to reduce air conditioning use. Even less popular options include having fuel injectors cleaned (17 percent), and using a fuel additive in each fill-up to increase engine performance (five percent).

Meanwhile, 26 percent of those surveyed said they would employ all of these recommended fuel-saving tips to achieve greater fuel economy or save money, and a contrasting five percent said they would do none.

When thinking about their next new-vehicle purchase, 69 percent of consumers are likely to change the vehicle they drive in order to improve their fuel economy or money situation: 22 percent would buy a hybrid version of a vehicle they already have; 21 percent would take a step down in vehicle size; 14 percent say they would buy a vehicle with a smaller engine or an engine with less power; and 12 percent say they would buy a diesel vehicle. Thirty-one percent of consumers say they would not change their next vehicle to improve fuel economy.

Create a Cowboy Western Theme Room in 6 Easy Steps

To create an unbelievable looking cowboy western theme room all you need to do is follow six easy steps. Is there work involved? Of course there is but the work is both fun and rewarding and you'll be amazed how great your room looks when you're finished.

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is come up with a wall color scheme that you like and has a western feel to it. There are various ways to do this and here is one great way that always works. Go to your local library or look online for cowboy western photos. Have a look at the bar rooms, the old hotels, the western scenery and so on. Why? Because you'll find some great looking wall color schemes. Some will be two-tone while others have a single wall color. This is a great way to start your brainstorming and come up with a fun and unique wall color for your cowboy western room.

Step 2

Next you'll want to come up with a floor style. Deciding on the type of flooring you want in your cowboy theme room really depends on exactly where that cowboy western room is located. For example if it were in your basement game room then a checkered floor with earth tone ceramic tiles would be what you want.

If it's in a different part of your home like a home office or bedroom then you'll want to look into hardwood or laminate flooring. The key to a great looking country western floor is the country western look and feel. With a dark hardwood floor you get that look and feel for a price. Now it's time to add western lighting to your room. This is a major part of creating a great western theme room that's both fun and functional.

There are various ways to bring western lighting into your room. The first way is to add a couple vintage western lanterns to your tabletops or bar. These add to the overall western look and feel. Next find a wall sconce or two with cowboys or bulls. For low lit situations these are truly beautiful and a must for your country western room.

To actually bring light into your room you'll need something bigger like a chandelier or pub lamp / swag lamp. Whether you go with an antler chandelier or one that's rustic looking it'll do the trick. Swag and pub lamps are good for game rooms. And country western themed table lamps are great for just about any room in your home.

Now you almost have a complete country western room with only two steps to go.

Step 5

So you have the lighting done but what good is it if you don't have anywhere to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. So Step 5 is all about adding country western furniture.

Here's where personal comfort comes in. There is some great looking western furniture made from wagon wheels. Personally I love that look but comfort wise it's probably not the best choice. Basically any type of furniture that has a brown tint to it would work in your western theme room.

But if you want something more western then go with hand carved or log furniture. You'll give your western room an outdoors feeling and that is always fun and unique.

Step 6

Step 6 is all about finishing off your Great Looking Cowboy / Country Western Room. How do you do that? You do that by adding the best, the coolest and the most unique western accessories and decorations you can find. This is where you imagination comes in handy.

Look for things that will enhance the overall western experience for friends and family. For example look for little things like a cast iron bottle opener or boot spurs. Add in a neat "Weather Rock Forecaster" for fun. Add an antler clock and if you're making a western game room add some vintage looking "wanted posters" and whisky bottles as decorations. Basically use your imagination and your western theme room will be the best in the state.

Now depending on how much time you have, creating your country western theme room could take anywhere from a week to a year. But don't rush it, take your time and enjoy the process. The state of Pakistan tried the same old card of Islam, autonomy, and democracy with the East Pakistan Bengali nation up to 1971, but evidently failed. Because, Pakistani rulers shamelessly denied Bengali people their language rights, excluded them from civilian, establishments and military jobs by saying the height of Bengalis were too short. The whole industries, businesses, and banks were occupied by dominated province of Punjab and by Urdu speaking {immigrant from India} while abandoning the Bengalis from all such opportunities. The irony is Pakistani rulers have been keeping parallel dark ruthless polices against the Baloch nations for many decades.

When Pakistani rulers aggressively continued its suppression against the Bengali nation the brutality of Pakistani military forces and injustices had awakened the entire Bengali nation who stood like an iron wall against the Pakistani ruthless army. Therefore, the Bengali national struggle led their people to their end destination, a separate state today called Bangladesh.

Similarly, since March 2005, Baloch nation realized the 5th bloody military operation, a massacre of Baloch nation. There has been extra judicial killing till today and the assassinations of their prominent Baloch leaders left no choice but struggle till victory and to protect Baluchistan’s rich-natural resources from occupiers who have forcefully and shamelessly been stealing for many decades.

These Pakistani rulers have two tiers of government and rules in their mind, one to protect their interest and one to keep exploiting the “Baloch national wealth”.

Baloch leaders and activists are thrown from military helicopters to the ground. Baluchistan’s well known scholars are being targeted by state agents.

“The government is deliberately targeting the cream of Balochistan. The best of the Baloch intellectuals and politicians are being killed one after another” says Baloch leader, Habib Jalib Baloch "parliamentary politician." This is true that Baloch scholar and the secretary of Mines and Minerals of Balochistan, Jan Muhammad Dashti, was deliberately targeted on February 23rd, 2009, and many Baloch writers and journalist in Balochistan. But Baloch honorable leaders should know that without being united the state will continue to “kill one after another” until the extinction of Baloch nation.

Therefore, “The Human Rights World reports 2009” says “Journalist continues to face pressure and threats from non-state actors and element of Pakistanis intelligence apparatus.”

On April 3rd 2009, Three Baloch leaders, Mir Gulam Mohammad Baloch, Lala Munir Ahamed, and Sher Mohammed Baloch had been kidnapped by dozens of Pakistani intelligence inside from their lawyer’s office. Their lawyer Mir Kachkol Ali, an senior advocate and former Balochistan assembly opposition leader.

On April 8th, 2009 all three Baloch leaders’ {martyred} dead bodies were found 35 kilometers far from city of Turbat, Balochistan where they had originally been kidnapped

The United Nations Secretary General’s spokesperson, Michele Mantas expressed his views about the Baloch leaders’ killing by the Pakistani intelligence, saying it is a “serious concern” and his statements continued saying “The United Nations extends its condolences to the families of the deceased.”  {April 10, 2009 the Nations Newspapers}

Recently the United Nations team had sought to help in freeing their refugee agency head (UNHCR) John Solecki who was kidnapped in Quetta, Balochistan, and two month ago by unknown arm groups, known as the Balochistan Liberation United Front (BLUF). They had demanded the Pakistani government to releases 1, 109 Baloch men along with 141 Baloch women whom are kept in prison in Pakistani intelligence secret cells.

The prominent Baloch leaders Nawab Khair Baksh Marri had played an important role by freeing John Solecki along with the Baloch leader Gulam Mohammed Baloch  and exile Baloch leader Nawabzada Hair Biar Marri from United Kingdom while all Baloch leaders had condemned the UN official kidnapping .  All three {Baloch leaders} had met with UN personals and on April 2nd, 2009 John Solecki was freed. BLUF spokesperson Shehek  Baloch said . “BLUF released the kidnapped UN employee on humanitarian grounds.”

Therefore in Islamabad the US embassy said “We condemned the recent killings of three Baloch leaders…one of the individual [Baloch leader Gulam Mohammed Baloch] played an active role in efforts towards the release of an American citizen and UNCHR official John Solecki.” (April 10, 2009 GEO televisions Pakistan)

The release of UN official John Solecki is good news. Yet, thousands of Baloch families still wake up every morning without seeing their loved ones, they continue to hope and dream of an end result like that of John Solecki . Their loved ones are still in the Pakistani intelligence prisons under torchers  and  Baloch nation is facing more disappearances and extra judicial killings across Balochistan as we speak.

The sharp reaction amongst the educated Baloch over the killings their leaders were strong  across Balochistan such as  ”By political killing of Baloch leaders,  the independence movement can not be put down, through Martyred of Gulam Mohammed Baloch , Lala Munir Ahamed Baloch and Sher Mohammed Baloch, the Baloch nation can not be afraid. A martyred always makes history..now the voice of freedom is coming from every house of Baloch. The Pakistani rulers, should remember that Baloch leaders Gulam Mohammed Baloch killing was not an individual case, by killing him they have murdered the whole Baloch nation..Baloch nation is going to rise up till their “independence.”  Writes a Banodee Baloch from Balochistan, Master degree in political science {April 11, 2009 Daily Tawar}

Former governor and Chief Minister of Balochistan a secular Baloch leaders {Martyred} Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti who had in-depth knowledge and experience about the Pakistani parliamentary politics, he had observed very closely the Pakistani rulers psychic he said, “We Baloch leadership are being offered as Chief Minister, governorship, Ministers, by encouraging receiving tons of salaries for our self to compromise our nation’s rights and to destroy our upcoming generation future.” 

He admitted boldly at the end of his political career that “ In Pakistan’s parliamentary politics, there is distress and distress only.”  And he also exposed the Pakistani ruler’s true face towards Baloch leaders by saying “Pakistanis rulers never stood with their promises.”  Baloch nations believe their legendary leaders had given a strong message to the present honorable Baloch leaders. Baloch gournalist Ahmar Mustikhan based in Washington DC writes the following regarding Akbar Khan Bugti: “Former U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, Robert Oakley, showered praise on Bugti during the slain leader's lifetime and said he was capable enough to become the governor of any state in the U.S. Oakley called Bugti a martyr." Pakistani rulers treated such a Baloch prominent and secular leader which has left a dark mark on Pakistani rulers’ history.

Perhaps, it will be a grave mistake by honorable Baloch leaders if they do not review their political strategy. This has been seen as bleakly effective, it has been failing their nation and if they continue with actions and methods of the past for the future, there is likely to be any positive or different result. They cannot expect a new result from such ineffective and tested parliamentary politics from the past, which can be stated in relevance to Albert Einstein’s explanation that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” In the end the Baloch nation is going to pay a high price for actions they can currently change, hence if they do this will evidently translate to change for the future, if not the price to be paid will be immense.

Our honorable leaders must serve as base for change for our future generation.

While Baloch nation continue to fight for freedom from their occupiers and oppressors, they are well aware that achieving such a goal will be a monumental struggle and rigorous battle to the end. Thus the need for unity and a strong alliance that needs to start from within the Baloch population before it can perpetuate any further.  The practice of appeasing the enemy state of Baloch, Pakistan for their self gain must stop and those leaders must refrain from such heinous activity. The only result that they should be happy with are those that further the cause of the Baloch National struggle till victory and nothing less. 

Baloch nation believe through their honorable Baloch leader’s unity along with the backing of their entire nation we will regain our sovereignty and free ourselves from slavery. That’s a realistic and achievable long dream for the Baloch nation. And because Baloch national struggle is legal, legitimate according to international law. Similarly, like East Timor leaders who led their entire nation to victory and history witnesses East Timor freed from Indonesia’s occupations and have become an independent nation. 

Ultimately, the nation believes the ball is in their honorable Baloch leader’s court.
