Are there any Model Railroaders out there that collect MTH Illinois Central passenger trains?

I collect "O" Gauge MTH Illinois Central Cars and engines. I presently have a set of ABA E6's and E8's. and a full consist for each engine set.

I also have a Rail King RS2 and about 20 cars of various road names.

Has anyone had quality issues with their MTH Engines? I have had the E6's and E8's in the shop at MTH.

How much exercise should a 8 year old toy poodle get each day?

I have recently adopted an 8-10 year old toy poodle who was a stray. At the moment I am taking him for two 10 minute walks per day and sometimes he has a little run around the garden. I was just wondering what is the recommended amount of walks a toy poodle should be having each day?

As is common in the stories of many successful entrepreneurs, Louis Marx & Company began with a firing. Louis Marx worked at Ferdinand J. Strass Company after graduating high school. The Strass Company was a mechanical tin toy manufacturer that produced tin toys for Abraham & Strauss Department Stores. They were a pioneer in the tin toy industry. After rising to the position of manager, Louis Marx was fired because of disputes over tin toy production.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War I, Marx decided to venture out on his own. In 1919, Louis and his brother David established Louis Marx & Company in New York City. They started with nothing but Louis' design talent and energy coupled with David's operational expertise. The company was not originally set up to be a tin toy manufacturer, but a middle man between the toy manufacturer and the retail stores. What would today be called a distributor. They soon began to start manufacturing their own tin toys and lived by two rules that would govern the company and contribute to their success, "Give the customer more toy for less money" and "Quality is not negotiable." The company soon earned the reputation of quality tin toys at low prices, and the Marx brand became noted for its value.

Marx bought his old employer, The Strass Company, in 1922 when Strass fell on hard times. This purchase gave Louis Marx & Company patents and dies to some famous Strass tin toys, Zippo the Climbing Monkey and the Alabama Minstrel Singer. In 1928, the company produced the first Yo-Yo and signed a deal with Sears Roebuck & Co. to carry it.

Despite the Great Depression, the 1930s was a time of rapid growth for Louis Marx & Company. Marx built three new plants in Erie, Pennsylvania, Girard, Pennsylvania, and Glendale, West Virginia. This growth continued until World War II, when the factories were recruited to the war effort and became a supplier for the U.S. Military. After the war, Louis Marx & Company returned to tin toy manufacturing and quickly became the world's largest tin toy manufacturer.

The company grew by leaps and bounds during the "Golden Era" of the 1950s. By 1955 Louis Marx & Company was producing 20% of all the tin toys sold in the U.S. and had factories in ten countries. They produced over 5000 different products including many tinplate toys that had made them famous in the beginning.

During the 1960s the Japanese were flooding the market with mass produced, cheap tin toys. In the 1970s tin started to be replaced with plastic and newer metal alloys. Marx's first plastic toys were disappointing because they lacked durability and they soon switched to polyethylene. In 1972 Louis Marx, now 76, knew it was time to get out and sold the company to Quaker Oats. Under Quaker's corporate culture the company suffered and 3 years later was sold to Dunbee-Combex of England. By 1980 the company filed for bankruptcy and operations were shut down. American Plastic Equipment of Florida acquired the company assets in 1982 and resurrected the Marx name. By 1988, old Marx toys commanded high prices from collectors and demand was triggered to reissue the toys. In 1995 a separate toy company was formed, Marx Toy Corporation, and the tradition of quality tin toys at a value price was reborn.

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline

Your local gas station probably offers you 3 levels of gasoline, like gold, silver and bronze. These typically have different levels of octane in them and you will generally get a little better mileage for the more expensive type.

In addition to different octane levels there are many different additives that can be in a companies brand of gasoline. This differentiation can have a huge impact on your vehicle and even the environment.

One type of additive is a detergent. Detergents clean your engine. Without some level of detergents engine deposits form and this causes reduced fuel efficiency, acceleration and power as well as increasing emissions and rough idling.

In 1994 four auto manufacturers (BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota) recognized the gasoline marketers were not putting enough detergents in their gasoline. They also recognized the U.S. EPA was not mandating a high enough minimum standard of detergents. In fact, after the EPA set a minimum standard gasoline producers reduced the amount of detergents in their gas because the standard was so low.

As a result vehicle owners were suffering reduced engine power, reduced fuel efficiency,

increased driving upsets (rough idle, stalling and surge), decreased acceleration and increased emissions.

These four automakers decided to do something about this problem because they wanted vehicle owners to have a more pleasurable experience with the vehicles they manufactured. They created their own class of gasoline called 'Top Tier Detergent Gasoline', containing a higher level of detergents, meant to keep vehicle owners happier with better engine performance and wear.

In 1994 a few gasoline distributors adopted this new industry standard and since then it has expanded to the following retailers: QuikTrip, Chevron, Conoco, Phillips, 76, Shell, Entec Stations, MFA Oil Company, Kwik Trip/Kwik Star, The Somerset Refinery, Chevron-Canada, Aloha Petroleum, Tri-Par Oil Company, Shell-Canada, Texaco, Petro-Canada and Sunoco-Canada.

I personally discovered this gas by trying the 'silver' gas out at Shell. I thought it would just increase performance for this one tank of gas due to the higher octane. Surprisingly, later fillups with the cheaper bronze gasoline still saw a 5% increase in mileage, not bad for an aging 5 year old car.

This gasoline is good for new cars as it keeps the engine running optimally and especially good for older cars with engine deposits.

Schuco Tin Toys

The internationally well known and loved German Company, Schuco, can be traced as far back as 1887, infact right back to the birth of one, Heinrich Muller.  As a teenager, Muller began making his own toys and pretty soon started working for another famous German toy company, Bing.  However, in 1912, Muller left the Bing Company and, together with Heinrich Schreyer (a local merchant), formed their own company, Schreyer & Co.  In 1921, this company became known as the now famous Schuco Company.

Schuco began by making small felt and plush figures and animals, but like all other German toy companies, like Steiff for example, the outbreak of the Fist World War halted their business.

However, once back in business, Schuco introduced it's Schuco-Patent-Motor-Car.  The great success of this product quickly gave way to Schuco producing a wonderful range of tinplate vehicles.  The Patent Car is powered by clockwork, but what really makes this tinplate car so very desirable is the fact that it "turns back from the edge", or,  in other words, the car will never fall from a table or play surface as, when it reaches the edge, it simply will not fall off - Amazing Isn't It !!  This incredible model, which we must not forget was made in the mid 1930's.  This idea was, as you can imagine greatly copied by many other toy companies, despite the fact that this model was 'patented'.

Once again, the outbreak of the Second World War stopped toy production at Schuco.  As early as 1946, the Schuco toy company had started to become a legend in the toy world and was talked about all over Europe and on both sides of the Atlantic.  Just like so many other German toy companies, such as Steiff, the toys produced in Germany had a quality which really were second to none and it was this great quality that was greatly impressing the American market.  Muller was personally responsible for all Schuco designs and he was also responsible for quality.  It is rumoured that Muller would throw each new model on the floor, to test it's resilience when the model was put into the hands of a child.

Tin Toys boomed in the late 1940's - 1950's, but then sadly, sales started to decline in the mid 1960's.  Tin toys started to be deemed as 'unsafe' for children, due to their sharp edges, but also a further contributory factor to the tin toy decline was the introduction of plastics to the toy world, which were both safer and more affordable.  Sadly then, Schuco went out of business in 1976.

In 1980, Gama (Georg Adam Mangold) who ironically was once a rival to the Shuco company, obtained the Schuco brand name and began creating reproductions of the old Schuco models.  In 1999, Schuco was sold to the Simba-Dickie Group (one of the largest toy companies in Europe).  Today Schuco's main aim is to re-establish the same quality as Schuco's past models.  They also tend to make reproductions of the tin toys that Schuco made iconic in the past.

Many grown-up's collect the old Schuco tin toys today, as they are small and extremely worthy works of art.  They certainly look amazing either shown as a collection, or as a single display item.  A Schuco tin toy model will almost certainly provoke a reaction from your friends, regardless of their age.

The condition of a Schuco tin model is, like so many other collectables, very important in terms of it's financial value, unused and also boxed items of course, being the ultimate.  However, sometimes a small amount of playwear, the odd dent or chip, adds a great amount of age history and character to a model.  Just like the old teddy bear that is age-worn, you wonder about the toy's history and this can sometimes add to the toy's desirability, depending of course on the collector.

There is always the option of having the model 'restored'.  Restoration such as having a repaint to body work will, almost always de-value an old model but then, on the plus-side some things are acceptable such as replacing a broken windscreen or repairing a clockwork spring, which leads us on to the Schuco Keys.  Owning an original Schuco tin toy, together with it's original key is always very desirable and, once again, adds to the model's value.  It really is down to the collector alone to decide whether or not he wants to collect just 'mint' models or whether he wants to collect 'used', perhaps like so many collectors he would prefer to seek a compromise.

Many toy companies around the world has indeed made really good tin toys and today's standards are very high, but setting aside modern replica tin toys, we find it highly unlikely that today's toys would even come close to the old Schuco models.

How many old and battered tinplate cars, for example, would still run?  After sixty years an old Schuco model will still run, infact it is very hard to find an old Schuco model that will not run.  Simply Amazing !!

Schuco tin toys is worthy of collectors.  They always have been and certainly always will be.
